The thing I enjoyed most about the film is the fact that it doesn't shy away from being a super-sized-cliche;
One of the most extraordinary films you will see this year. Take that as you want.
Let me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.
I enjoyed watching this film and would recommend other to give it a try , (as I am) but this movie, although enjoyable to watch due to the better than average acting fails to add anything new to its storyline that is all too familiar to these types of movies.
This is a movie I seen as a teen that gave me the creeps - and I think of this film every time I go to a hospital *shivers*.The movie is a thriller and has some slasher type qualities to it. Most people do not identify this film as a slasher film I guess because it did not have 10 sequels after the first.If you have a love for horror/thrillers then you may like Visiting Hours. The movie seems to be underground these days and should be brought back into the "must see horror arena". It is quite chilling and will leave you on the edge of your seat.I have to agree with other reviews I've read on Visiting Hours that maybe the reason this film is so underrated is because Bill Shatner is in the film. William has played other movie and TV roles quite well but most people only see him as Kirk and cannot shake that image - he's been wrongfully stereotyped. Shatner's role in this film was good! Do not let your love or dislike of William Shatner keep you from watching and, maybe, enjoying this film.8.5/10
A crazed, women-hating killer (Michael Ironside) attacks journalist Deborah Ballin (Lee Grant). When he discovers that his attack did not kill Deborah, he comes to the hospital to finish what he started.Is this a good film? Is it a good slasher? Is it a good Canadian slasher? Many people would say no to these, but I think this is a good one just for existing. Of course, I am a pro-slasher horror fan, so it may not take much... but throw in Michael Ironside and William Shatner and how can you go wrong? Director Jean-Claude Lord may not be well known, especially in the world of horror. Not only is he not a horror director primarily, but he is from Quebec, so much of his work is in French! Honestly, I am not even sure if I ever saw anything else he did.
*Minor spoilers*I've always found a hospital setting in a Slasher movie to be ideal. It's one of the creepiest places in the world for me, and to have a killer stalking you makes it all that more effective. It worked like a charm in Halloween II, and it worked here as well to a bit of a lesser degree. Visiting Hours is a Canadian production which seems to have a love and hate affair among fellow Horror fans. Whilst it didn't blow me away, and it's not something I plan on going out of my way to see again, I actually had an OK time with it. It certainly has some effective atmosphere at times. I enjoyed the slow stalk scenes and how Michael Ironside would toy with the people he was after. There is no special gimmicks with him, he doesn't wear a mask; he's an unadulterated psychopath. He gave me the willies, and I would not want this man after me in the Hospital. He was responsible for a lot of the suspense. He was excellent. Lee Grant is a very solid actress, and did just fine here, but she over does the hysterics big time. Her whiny performance got on my nerves, despite that she was technically solid. Linda Purl is as vital as a heroine as Lee Grant was. She had a sense of innocence that I loved, and she was probably my favorite female performer in this one. William Shatner cashes in a paycheck and pays his bills like we all have too. That's the only reason he was probably here. He did what he had to do adequately. Gore hounds will most likely be disappointed. There is blood, but not much of it. We get some stabbings, and one nasty scene where someone breaks a glass bottle and purposely smashes the arm into the broken pieces. I cringed at that one. Oh; yeah. I almost forgot We get a flashback scene where a Father tickles his kid and forcefully pours booze down the kid's throat. I personally count that as a gore Just for the sheer WTF factor.Final Thoughts: It's forgettable when all is said and done, but I actually didn't mind it for what it was. It has some good stalk scenes, and the atmosphere was pretty creepy at times. Aside from a slow middle where it dragged a little bit, and some questionable plot holes, you could do a hell of a lot worse when it comes to 80's slashers. It's better than a lot of them 5.5/10
Deborah Ballin is a controversial TV journalist, who is campaigning on behalf of a battered woman who murdered her abusive husband, claiming justifiable defence against the so- called victim. But her outspoken views incense one of the cleaning staff, closet homicidal psycho Colt Hawker whose deep seated despising all things female occurred from seeing his Mother throwing boiling oil in the face of his abusive Father So much so that he decides there and then to kill her. Managing to beat her home, he soon dispatches her maid Francine, before turning his rage onto her as she comes home. Despite the brutal injuries, she manages to survive and is rushed off to hospital. But he catches up to her in hospital and disguised as a florist... to continue his mission to finish her off...One of the so called video nasties of the eighties, the only thing nasty about this is the poor acting, and Shatner being as slimy as he can be.Ironside is okay, as the tortured soul, he plays his part well, it's just a shame that the rest of the cast are just full of expendable caricatures, practically begging Ironside to kill them.The film should have been a stalk and slash movie, set during one night, but they drag it on over a course of a few days, and the film turns to the old adage of everyone thinking that the victim is mad, right up until the last minute.It's been done before, and its never anything more than annoying.This really had the potential to be a great movie, but it fails, no wonder it's so hard to find.
