Fantastic!
best movie i've ever seen.
I like movies that are aware of what they are selling... without [any] greater aspirations than to make people laugh and that's it.
There's no way I can possibly love it entirely but I just think its ridiculously bad, but enjoyable at the same time.
What a pleasant surprise this sleeper turned out to be. I thought I had seen every (American) film made about this story and was still waiting for a realistic one to be made. Upon seeing this film, my wait was over. We bought this DVD and frequently lend it out to anyone willing to take the time to watch it. In my opinion, it is on my "Not to be missed" list.We just found out that the executive producer is Toby Emmerich, who was also executive producer "Hair Spray" and writer of "Frequency". Mr. Emmerich now has a new avid fan.Congrats go to Priscilla John, Mindy Marin, Juliette Ménager and Shaila Rubin for casting that was perfect. Olivia Hussey was my favorite "Mary" until Keisha Castle-Hughes usurped her. Oscar Isaac was also the most believable "pursuer of Mary / heart-broken reactor to her pregnancy" that I've witnessed. Hiam Abbass's portrayal of cognitive dissonance over who she knows her daughter to be and the reality of the pregnancy was compelling. If you have any interest in this story at all, please do yourself the favor of carving out the 101 minutes to spend with this rendition of "the Holy family".
When I heard about this movie, my immediate thought was finally a movie about the birth of Christ. No Santa Claus, no trees, or Christmas carols. Its the true story of Christmas. I was amazed that this crew pulled it off and they did it very good. The setting was perfect, the story followed accordingly to the bible scriptures, the acting was good. Kiesha Castle Hughes portrayed Mary very well. She had the character look down pat and she delivered the dialogue with a good sense of passion and grace. Oscar Isaac did a great job portraying Joseph. He had the look down perfectly and capitalized on bringing the true couple of Mary and Joseph to life on the silver screen. Overall, for a movie that portrayed a good bible story was pretty good. I thought it could have been a little better but for a first time attempt to bringing this tale to life, its acceptable.
A deeply moving movie experience. Slow yes, but then this is not our usual brain numbing mindless action flick. It's about human emotions and inner conflicts, and what a fine way to portray the same on screen.A vastly underrated film that is sure to touch your heart the same way Shawshank Redemption did. A must watch for every serious movie lover and a definite must watch for a devout Christian.Note: I am not a Christian and I still find this movie worthy of a repeat viewing. This movie, like Shawshank Redemption is all about Faith, Hope and Love. ...and believing.I was watching this movie just a little after MIDNIGHT and it was raining heavily with heavy flashes of Lightning and huge/loud rolls of Thunder. This effect enhanced the overall "atmosphere" of my movie watching experience, ...and hard to believe, but the whole rain, lightning & thunder thing stopped as the movie wound to an end :-)
I'm a Christian, but typically don't watch Christian-themed movies because on the whole, they're cheesy and not well produced. From a strictly critical viewpoint (not of the biblical story it's based on, but how it was done) this movie was above par. That being said, it reminded me of 30 minutes of material stretched to 90 minutes, with lots of filler.I'm sure there are some out there who feel you can't be critical of material based on the bible. To me it's like basing my beliefs after watching the epic 'The Ten Commandments' with Edward G. Robinson as an Egytian overseer an accurate historical depiction.Overall, it was a decent film, not great, but OK. It had some touching scenes and good cinematography, but as good as it was, it was like drinking soda, just before all the fizz runs out.
