A documentary revealing the under-appreciated, highly demanding world of Broadway Understudies and Standbys. Three undiscovered performers at various points in their careers get the chance of a lifetime. Their struggle is put into perspective through never-before-heard stories from celebrities who themselves were once Understudies or Standbys.

if their story seems completely bonkers, almost like a feverish work of fiction, you ain't heard nothing yet.
Very good movie overall, highly recommended. Most of the negative reviews don't have any merit and are all pollitically based. Give this movie a chance at least, and it might give you a different perspective.
The movie turns out to be a little better than the average. Starting from a romantic formula often seen in the cinema, it ends in the most predictable (and somewhat bland) way.
It is an exhilarating, distressing, funny and profound film, with one of the more memorable film scores in years,
What a charmer! As I watched this highly entertaining and fascinating documentary, I wondered why no film maker has covered this subject before. We see the stories of three Broadway Standbys. All three personalities take on a challenging profession with determination and loads of talent. This director knows how to tell a story. Everyone in the theater seemed enraptured.I,personally, would like to see all three of these Broadway standbys land a lead in their own Broadway show. THE STANDBYS should be shown to every casting director, producer, and director in the business. Those who dream of being an actor would benefit greatly from seeing this film also.
