Former child prodigy James Harries and his family may at first sight seem to be a houseful of geniuses, but although every single member has a Ph.D. in Metaphysics, we soon discover that some were purchased from a fake university in the USA, while the others were awarded to them by themselves. They regard themselves as morally, intellectually, and financially superior to the rest of society, even though the clan (housed in a mock mock-Tudor cottage in the middle of a Cardiff council estate) includes a convicted arsonist, an astral projectionist, a former Bunny Girl, a part-time private detective and a transgender daughter (James is now Lauren), all of whom seem to live their lives in a parallel universe.

Often poignant, frequently funny and ultimately uplifting, this excellent documentary gives three young women the chance to tell their own stories about growing up with the universal awkwardness of adolescence further complicated by their homosexuality.Though the participants come from the reputedly liberated land of Sweden, it is painfully apparent from this film that small-town bigotry is everywhere. Nevertheless, the trio face up to their dilemmas with a mixture of determination and wry humour that is touching and inspiring. When I read that the three had been given hand-held cameras and invited to shoot their own footage, I feared that the film might have a clumsy home-movie feel. I was quite wrong. It's actually beautifully edited, and the 74 minutes zipped by. There's some great music too, some of it performed by our three heroines. Some of the most poignant moments come from the fear that all three girls express about 'coming out' to their parents. Seeing said parents introduced, you suspect that it isn't really going to be as bad as they think, and the film ends up making a strong case for frank communication as well as for gay rights. A charming, powerful, heartwarming and very human story.

I happened upon this film while flipping channels and the first thing that caught my eye was the lush color - the cinematography is striking, yet seamless (really beautiful work, I thought). The stories told by the three young women are poignant, heartbreaking and at the same time triumphant for the LGBQT community and its allies. I had a permanent smile on my face after viewing this movie. I hope many people have the chance to see this film - truly touching.
