The Worst Film Ever
The best films of this genre always show a path and provide a takeaway for being a better person.
A terrific literary drama and character piece that shows how the process of creating art can be seen differently by those doing it and those looking at it from the outside.
I'm a fan of cult movies so it's easy for me to say that Crime Wave is one of my favorite films of all time, and it inspired me to create and continues to do so.It is a travesty that there is no DVD release of this film. I had to get a personal copy of it from a VHS bootleg at a convention. Limited accessibility is frustrating to me because, I feel that the film is not only entertaining, it's also educational. In my opinion, there has never been a more accurate or hilarious portrayal of the struggles of the creative process than the one in Crime Wave. The films is both riotously funny and, at times, heartwarming. It's a must watch if you're an artist who has attacks of self-doubt or just someone who enjoys wacky off-beat comedies.
Stylistically hip and self-referential and at the same time truly side splitting. I am surprised that it's relatively unknown given how brilliant it is. If you get the chance, watch it! A friend brought it over, he apparently had a copy that John Paizs had given him. I was so surprised I'd never heard of it nor John before. Now I really like "Kids in the Hall" but this movie is something else. I was very surprised that it was created before any of the work John did with them. Highlights for me would be:-Steven's stories -The Halloween Party -Persistence of visionNow to find a copy of "Top of the Food Chain"
As far as commenting on the film is concerned, I can only echo what others have already said. "Crime Wave" is brilliant and beautifully filmed. I watched the film today and I found the Kodak film used is no longer available so perhaps another film with just this look will never be possible again? Now to the exciting news: I have just purchased (and received on 8 February 2009) copies of "Crime Wave" and "Springtime in Greenland" on DVD.The guidelines prevent me from linking directly to the site but just use Google and look for "John Paizs" and "Crime Wave". I hope the 'availability' clause still won't prevent this comment from appearing.
Just one of those films you know that blow your mind, stick in your head for a year and makes all others movies look like over budget Hollywood crap. It's like watching pure imagination! One piece of advice: Stop working now and start looking for it. I found a used VHS of it years ago and since then, I can say the world dosen't look the same anymore. The top: only few people made it, and John Paizs is one of them.I know it may sound a little bit crazy but seriously, if you love movies that make you wonder how can someone could possibly think of that, give it a try.
