Simply A Masterpiece
It's no definitive masterpiece but it's damn close.
This is a tender, generous movie that likes its characters and presents them as real people, full of flaws and strengths.
Easily the biggest piece of Right wing non sense propaganda I ever saw.
A great movie needs the writer, director and actors all to be very, very good. Wise Girls has all three.Acting is much more than just saying the words in the script. There is tone, there is timing, and sometimes a silence can say more than a whole lot of words. Great actors can show in their facial expression just the emotion and meaning that fits the scene perfectly. All, yes all these actors do this all through the movie. Of course, the actors need a great writer and director to get the best out of themselves. Here they have all met, and delivered. The story is straightforward and easy to follow, there are elements that we see connect to give meaning to what is happening now and what is about to happen. The characters are well defined, the events are realistic, and gripping. It was good at the start, and I kept worrying that it would get disappointing, but that never happened, it kept getting better and better. Three beautiful young women are waitresses is an up-market restaurant where the owners are involved in some shady but unspecified side businesses. The women, each with secrets which we eventually learn about, are dragged into events and really need to get themselves clear. They combine, they support, they do what needs to be done.At one point, Meg ( Mira Sorvino) who normally speaks so sweetly - like the girl next door, but in this moment of stress, her voice changes, and sounds so menacing. Brilliant, you'll know when you hear it. The grandmother, with perhaps dementia just sits there, says only a few words, but she too is brilliant and her inclusion adds so much to the reality of Meg's situation both in the first scene, and the last. Brilliant writing.
Wow! Who would have thought that a movie with Gwenyth Paltro or Mira Sorvino (whatever her name is!) in it would have been overshadowed by the powerful acting performance of Mariah Carey! Seeing Mira's nice ones hang out of her low cut black dress was definitely the low point in the film! The high point was most definitely brilliant acting from Mariah! How about the scene where the guy shoots his nose off, and Mariah's reaction to it. The scene called for someone to be shocked or horrified or disgusted that they had to plug up the nose holes on the man's blood soaked face - most actors certainly would have played it that way. But not Mariah! She had the foresight to giggle throughout such a dramatic scene. And of course the shoot-out between the wise guys and the feds is classic. So true to life! I mean, wise guys lawyers can never get them off from such serious legal charges. So of course a shoot-out with a much better armed fed/swat forces was the best course of action! Bravo story writer! All in all, one of the best films I have seen in recent years. Absolutely stunning acting from Mariah and a very believable story and ending adds to this great masterpiece. All involved should be truly proud! Mira -you should wear dresses like that more often!
Wisegirls was such an awesome movie!! I love Mariah and although her acting can never compare to her singing, she was amazing in this movie, especially when compared to her acting in Glitter. Hopefully Mariah will act this good or better in the next movie she films, which should be Sweet Science. I loved the movie because it had a lot of action and suspense. Anybody who likes suspense, drama and action should see this movie. I showed this movie to one of my friends and she loved it. I asked her about Mariah, since I'm a huge fan, and she said that she was really good in the movie. She went out the next day, rented the movie and showed it to her parents because she thought it was that awesome. Anybody who thinks Mariah can't act should see this movie.
I was advised by my video store clerk how really bad this movie was but I persisted especially after reading some of the user comments here. The plot, though predictable, is well played. It starts off slow and after a while, you feel like it's not really getting anywhere but things start turning just as when you least expect it. But guys be warned - it's a chick flick so you might not have the patience for it.You guys are right - Mariah is pretty decent here but I don't think she had to stretch too much. She's basically playing herself but she's doing it smart; you know, playing familiar characters before venturing into the unknown. I just wish she'd cover up a bit more. She looks like a striptent reject!Mira Sorvino is the light of this movie. She seemed to have disappeared after getting an Oscar but I don't think the movie executives are too pleased with her movie role choices coz I don't hear about her anymore. Anyways, she did good here and if she keeps this up, she'll get another Oscar. I just don't understand why she's not getting all the hoo-haa. She's got the looks and the talent for it.
