David is an artist and a pothead. He's fallen in love with the beautiful and sexy Serena, and things are going simply splendidly until poor David's house burns down. Serena doesn't need the bad vibes, so she splits the scene and runs off to New York with rocker and junkie Tommy. Lonely David finally turns to the sweet, sweet comfort of marijuana and his strange menagerie of friends to forget about his lost home and love

A different way of telling a story
Yo, there's no way for me to review this film without saying, take your *insert ethnicity + "ass" here* to see this film, like now. You have to see it in order to know what you're really messing with.
I don't have a high bar for stoner movies, I tend to like most of them for the usual reasons. I came upon this in a 4/20 list from the main page of this site and as i hadn't seen it(or don't remember), I read the load of positive reviews and thought "awesome, a good stoner movie I haven't seen!". You all lied. Shame on you. This movie was almost terrible. A few amusing/reminiscent moments are all that separates this from total and utter garbage. Jack Black is not an actor I like, yet somehow manages to be the best part of this movie... with his 5 minutes of screen time.Do yourself a favor and pick a different stoner flick.
I had almost forgotten about this movie until recently. What a mistake that was. To say this movie is a quirky comedy is an understatement. This is one of those movies that you get more out of the more times you see it. There is a lot of subtle comedy and commentary about the 90's underground culture. It's not just a stoner movie, but it does have a lot of that, too. It came out a year before Half Baked and I think it is a superior movie. The story revolves around a group of hipster-types in Portland who don't seem to have much of a future outside of their city. They spend most of the film getting high but there is a bit of sadness to the whole thing but it balances that well with the comedic aspects. The cast is great, too. It is pretty amazing to see so many future stars in one movie. Jack Black, Luke Wilson, Brittany Murphy, Jamie Kennedy, Jeremy Sisto , Andy Dick and Scott Cann all in the same movie. Wow. The acting is great and Like Wilson and Jack Black really stand out. Watching this film really makes me miss the 90's.I was pleasantly surprised to see that this movie is now available on iTunes. So it is no longer one of those "hard to find" films.
I have seen this movie three nights ago and I can honestly tell you I liked it. If you are wondering should you watch it or not - I would suggest you to consider the situation and circumstances the first. "Bongwater" is not kind of a movie you would like to see with your girlfriend or after a family gathering evening. From the other side - if you are sitting there with your friends looking for a movie to brighten your evening up, or if you are alone maybe - go for it! "Bongwater" seems like a typical stoner's' movie, but I believe it's much beneath that. Calling it such would be equal to calling "That 70s Show" typical stoner's' stuff, hence this TV series became sort of a cult. "Bongwater" is kind of a movie that is going to make you laugh out loud while tickling your imagination about the same thing you are laughing at. If you see through it couple of times I believe you will find it much deeper than it seems at the first glance.David, starred by Luke Wilson, is a small-pocket, short-run dope dealer. The movie follows his ups and downs with emphasis on his unhappy relationship with Serena. Things are turning from bad to worse as movie progresses, in emerging ironic manner. If you are in a mood to laugh, brace yourselves. I found whole movie quite funny myself. Few scenes really knocked socks off my feet and I didn't expect to see that kind of scenes inside a movie produced back in late 90s.Bongwater is a great stuff to watch on a guys' night or if you are alone and wondering what to watch to make you cheerful. I am taking it three points away for slightly blurry plot at few places, as you will see it yourself. You might lose your end of the rope here and there as the plot is running down the rabbit hole and story switches ups and downs unexpectedly fast.If you want to laugh - you got it. If you want to relax - you got that one as well. In case you are looking for some sort of "Da Vinci's Code" stuff - look elsewhere.
I liked this movie. It is very subtle and kind of vague but that makes it more realistic to me, because real life isn't like "American Pie" or "Reality Bites", it is sometimes slow, vague, and doesn't go from point A to B with one single plot or any continuity. It also seems a little less contrived than it's contemporaries such as "Slackers", "Chasing Amy", etc. I knew a guy that rented this movie with his Wife and her sister and they hated it while he liked it and sure enough they divorced within 2 months. So this movie was at least powerful enough to make them realize the differences in themselves, and if a movie is at least partially responsible for a divorce that makes it better than most of the garbage that Hollywood chucks out to the public.
