Very disappointing...
The Worst Film Ever
That was an excellent one.
There's no way I can possibly love it entirely but I just think its ridiculously bad, but enjoyable at the same time.
A meteorite lands in America bringing with it an alien lifeforce which proceeds to go a bloody killing spree. Mega low budget sci-fi/horror from 1983 which delivers buckets loads of blood and gore. The acting is quite reasonable, unusual for films of this budget. There is plenty of dark humour but also a few moments of fear, for example when young horror obsessed Charles (with whom I can easily identify) enters his home's cellar in the dark, only to find the creature down there. The special effects certainly are not of Rob Bottin standard but they are surprisingly gruesome and plentiful. Great, fun b-movie that can be enjoyed with repeated viewings and is proof of what can be achieved despite such a low budget.
Alright I'm going to be honest for once, I love the deadly spawn. Sure it's just a great big plate of cheese on toast with a side of entrails but it has a timeless feel to it that I just can't resist in a movie. Stop! I know you're asking yourself "what makes this film so great, there are about a million other alien b-movies I could be watching" but that's my point the film doesn't try to take itself seriously and accepts what it is, a budget horror film, it doesn't try to be anything more or less. Without ruining the film for you or leak any spoilers out I will ask you to check this film out, or at least give it a go. If you are after spectacular special effects, brilliant story and top notch acting this film will heavily disappoint you. But if you are after; a giant three-headed slug monster in a cellar, hammy performances, brilliant gore and a shock ending, then this is the hammy pile of lovable 80s schlock is for you.2/5 'The deadly spawn' 1983
Yes, this has got crap acting, barely any plot, and an out loud shoddy budget, but the crazy alien effects and high gore level make this one a total buzz to sit through. This is yet another film I remember being advertised when I was a kid, and it didn't disappoint. The plot, as it were, involves a meteorite falling to Earth and disgorging an alien that kind of resembles Audrey 2 from Little Shop of Horrors, only much more toothsome, bigger, and deadlier. It also seems to reproduce rather rapidly as we see it set up shop in a family's basement and start chowing down on the parents of our heroes, Charles the teenage horror fan and his brother, whose name I've already forgotten. Also present to be eaten are Aunt and Uncle, and some friends of the older brother, who, in a departure from films of this ear, are hard working students rather than pot smoking hedonists. So it's a 'people trapped with killer aliens film' with plenty of the red stuff on view. Folks have their faces ripped off, hands severed, we see a poor fellow bisected with aliens feeding on him, and some poor girl has her head bitten clean off. This is all good to sad people like me who enjoy this kind of thing. There's also a mass spawn attack on a bunch of old ladies too, for variety. It's not rocket science by any means but who can hate a film like this? The killer ending is both a) a head scratcher and b) most welcome in a dumb kind of way. Also, the teenage son had a Tales from the Crypt poster in his room, which was the film I watched directly before this one. Nice.
As far as low budget alien invasions movies goes this movie was one of the best I have seen. It has been a long time since I have seen it, and the last time I did I was a kid, but I still remember it enough to know I liked every bit of it. I saw the movie with the super long title Return of the Alien: The Deadly Spawn, a title that was obviously trying to make itself out as some sort of Alien sequel like so many other alien movies of that time. This one did not really need to attach itself to that film though as it was a nice, super gory movie with a bit of humor in it to boot, humor that actually worked. The story has these aliens that look like tadpoles on the loose, and like all tad poles the turn into something bigger and even more deadly. In fact from how the movie ended I would say there is no telling how big they can get if they can feed enough. The creatures do lots of killing, even in their smaller tadpole like state and they cause a lot of havoc, thank goodness that kid shared the same hobby as Tommy from the Friday the 13th movies, though this came out first so one has to wonder if they stole that particular plot point from this film. I wonder if this movie is on DVD as I would love to see it again, granted I am sure the effects will not look as good and it will be dated, but from what I remember it will still be enjoyable to watch.
