On Ironbound Island, native Fiona McKay arrives from Europe with her teenage daughter Clair, hoping that the peace of the island will help the girl get over the death of her boyfriend. The girl finds comfort in the company of a visiting American girl and more so in the stories of Celia, a crazy old local who weaves enchanting tales which cleverly combine her own experiences on the island with mystifying legends.

Bad Acting and worse Bad Screenplay
As somebody who had not heard any of this before, it became a curious phenomenon to sit and watch a film and slowly have the realities begin to click into place.
I think this is a new genre that they're all sort of working their way through it and haven't got all the kinks worked out yet but it's a genre that works for me.
The story, direction, characters, and writing/dialogue is akin to taking a tranquilizer shot to the neck, but everything else was so well done.
A beautiful story. truly the best acting job I have seen in a movie in years. Dunst does a wonderful job as a happy go lucky teenager. She does a great job showing how love can possess anyone. The story of the 50 year heist of fish leaves one wondering who is can be. Dunstdoes a wonderful job acting, but Lynn Redgrave does an even better job in the end. It doesn't come out until the end that Redgrave is Silly. One of the best dramatic acting rolls I have seen in ages. Perhaps the best acting job is done by Julia Brendler. You don't see that she too is the 50 year recipient. The pain and anger she feels at losing her first love comes to play as she realizes she is the one. the movie ends with her accepting this fate and starts to play her violin again. A truly great movie, every piece falls into place at the end. wonderfully written, wonderfully acted, wonderfully directed!
Altogether, this movie was decent. I have to admit that I didn't care for it the first time I watched it, but when I saw it for the second time I saw many things that I'd overlooked. The movie isn't the most attention-grabbing at first, but it weaves together a lot of story lines, which all come together at the climax of the movie (which is beautifully and intricately done, the best scene.) Of course it is predictable, but what movie nowadays isn't? And even though we call it cliché, the clichés work because they're "good" clichés. Lovers running off together...dying as an ultimate sacrifice...an island curse... It's been done before, yada yada...so? It's still fun.The music haunting and very effective. I personally loved the actress who portrayed Claire, and I get rather annoyed when I see people harping on her German accent...especially when it states clearly IN the movie that Claire is FROM Berlin. Berlin is in Germany. Airgo: *She is supposed to have a German accent.* I was also impressed by the actress who played Celia. Very, very nice, and she gave a few laughs. I was not impressed with Kirsten Dunst. I don't believe that she gave enough in this role, and her accent was appalling and horrid to say the least. I can say nothing but Bad Acting. They could have gotten a different actress (not based on name and fame) and I'm sure the movie would have been better. Kirsten Dunst is a decent actress, but she disappointed me in this movie.I'm surprised that I haven't seen the boy who plays James around. He looks like a young Josh Hartnett, and was very believable in his role as the carefree James. He really stole my heart. I want one. All in all, I would say that this movie is good depending on tastes. I am a romantic at heart, and a fan of tragic romances...so I do like this movie. I don't watch it on a normal basis, and some parts of the movie I would change...but it is not half bad. The music and the lovely climax scene are the highlights of the movie...as well as what carries it entirely. Can I not stress enough how the CHARACTER was from Berlin, and so her German accent FIT her ROLE? Grr.
Kirsten Dunst is a beautiful, talented actress. But even SHE could not save this dumb, plodding movie. Once again, Canadians prove conclusively that they canNOT make good films. But Kirsten? My GOD, she looks sexy, even when she issweeping a porch!!! But, if you want to see her really do her thing, watch the movie Spiderman. The kissing scene in that movie is incredibly erotic.Hey, I really like romantic movies. See "Ten Things I Hate About You" or "French Kiss" for romance. This movie? "Deeply" should have been buried, deeply, very deeply. It is pure dreck, except, of course, for the total Dunst fan, who will enjoy watching her beautiful features and amazing grace.
A young girl comes with her mother to her ancestral home on an island off the coast of Nova Scotia to escape the sudden death of her first love. She withdraws from the world around her until she crosses paths with an old hermit-like lady who tells her a tale of a great fishing village, an age-old viking curse and a lovelorn couple that faces Shakespearian tragedies. Parallels between her life and the tale open up her heart so she can mourn her love.Beautifully filmed this bittersweet lovestory is a bit of a tearjerker and ends a bit sourly. Good direction and heartfelt acting are abundant but the story is a bit of a downer. 8/10
