Good story, Not enough for a whole film
Crappy film
It's easily one of the freshest, sharpest and most enjoyable films of this year.
The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.
Robert Benson (Will Ferrell) is a best selling author and financial guru. His wife Sarah (Kristen Wiig) suffers a miscarriage after a dock accident. Five years later, Robert is a recluse and a recovering alcoholic. Sarah is an organic food vendor. He's overprotective of their diabetic daughter Sully (Alyvia Alyn Lind). They're looking to adopt and they meet expecting mother Bridgette Gibson (Jessica Lowndes). They invite Bridgette to stay with them rather than going back to the women's shelter. The problem is that something ominous about Bridgette. Is it a spoof? Yes, sort of. This is a fascinating odd little Lifetime TV movie. These are great comedians playing it somewhat straight. Yet the dialogue is read with a (pardon the pun) pregnant pause. They are acting sincere but they seem to be doing it with a nudge and a wink. It is serious but it is not at all serious. It opens with a ridiculous dock accident. There's no way this is being treated as a serious drama. Just look at Will Ferrell's hair. That's insanely wrong. But nobody is playing this for easy Wayans brothers' parody laughs. I laugh when Sarah and Bridgette fight but they are not doing a fake comedic fight. This is a fun weird movie.
Middle-aged writer Will Ferrell (as Robert Benson) and his attractive blonde wife Kristen Wiig (as Sarah) are expecting a second child. One tragic day, on their luxurious country estate, Ms. Wiig backs off her dock and falls arse-over-backwards into the lake. She loses the baby and (apparently) the ability to have any more. Five years later, the wealthy couple contact an adoption agency and meet pretty pregnant Jessica Lowndes (as Bridgette). To make sure Ms. Lowndes' pregnancy progresses with ease, Mr. Ferrell invites the beautiful brunette to move in with the family. Since this is a "Lifetime TV Movie", you can expect things will not go smoothly for the growing family...Getting a vision of Ferrell, at home, watching "Lifetime" TV Movies involving sexy young surrogate mothers who seemingly go psycho. He says, "I can make one of those." Yes, you can! "The Surrogate" and many others are, apparently, very popular. Former sit-com star Kirstie Alley made one of the more entertaining ones, "Baby Sellers", so why not Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig? "A Deadly Adoption" follows the formula very well. Now, with Ferrell's usual output, and the presence of "Saturday Night Live" chum Andrew Steele as writer, you may be expecting a laugh-filled spoof. Yet, everyone plays it straight. So, you have an average "Lifetime" TV movie.***** A Deadly Adoption (2015-06-20) Rachel Lee Goldenberg ~ Will Ferrell, Jessica Lowndes, Kristen Wiig, Jake Weary
I was curious to say the least. I wouldn't say I am a super fan of Wil's but I do like him, so when I saw this I thought give it a go. Looks like he wants to play it straight so who knows, might be good. Please. Pleaaaasseeeeeeeeee. I watched the trailer and already my head told my heart jog on. But did I listen, no! I thought go on, watch a bit, what's to lose? other than the will to live, 'scuse pun! It's bad, bad everything. Writing, acting, no need to write about spoilers because you can see them coming a mile down the road. It is truly awful and unless you need to watch a very bad film because you're being made to watch one to analyse in film class then stop right there Mrs.... It's not worth it. I'm disappointed, because I like Will but wow, what was he thinking. Deserves a zero. minus
A deadly adoption is a Drama with some Mystery/Thriller elements thrown in there, and stars Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig in roles that you would not be used to seeing them in. And i would have to say they did a pretty good job in these serious roles, Will Ferrell especially i thought for the most part got me to see him as a serious character rather than the funny guy, so i wouldn't mind seeing him do more of this. The main thing this movie suffers most from is it didn't know what it was most of the time, there were times where it is like a soap opera then switches to a mystery, then a thriller, and then i don't even know what that ending was, it was just a mess. Like, the first 20 - 30 minutes is dreadfully unwatchable, all the dialogue is cliché and fake, and it all just seemed very dull and boring. The character interactions were all odd and in terms of the plot, a lot of that first 30 minutes was completely pointless, well, i thought the whole movie was pretty pointless. After that you start to get a little bit of mystery and before you know it the tone flips again and you are almost watching a completely different movie. I have to say though, during the middle portion where things start to get a little odd and you can sense something is up, the interactions between Will Ferrell's character and Jessica Lowndes' character were pretty entertaining and made we wonder what was going on. But at the same time it was very predictable early on, what was coming up next was predictable but the reasons behind some actions weren't clear until later. And even then it was just confusing and the more i think about it the more confused i get. This was just a very weird movie, i'm not sure what the director was trying to show but it looked like they just got it all wrong. Apart from some good convincing acting from Ferrell and Wiig, and some intriguing mystery themes in the second act, the whole film was a complete mess and it made it hard to stay interested for long periods of time. - 4.7
