How sad is this?
The performances transcend the film's tropes, grounding it in characters that feel more complete than this subgenre often produces.
One of the film's great tricks is that, for a time, you think it will go down a rabbit hole of unrealistic glorification.
This movie really draws you in. You feel for the characters, even the one you want to hate. Nothing is black and white and no one is naturally evil- they are made that way. So I don't like movies show the world in black and white, good and evil. That stuff is for fairy tales. Only children and imbeciles think this way, and I am neither. I like more nuanced movies. I like the kind of movie where you sympathize with both the "good" guys and the "bad" guys. This movie did that for me. Certain kinds of religion also promote the world view that some people are good and some are evil (gays and muslims, for instance). "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone". "Judge not your brother lest you be judged". "Love thy neighbor"The movie effectively makes the distinction between the two types of religious faith- the kind that makes the world a better, more loving place for everyone, and the kind that breeds hate in the hearts of men and causes them to despise their brother- causes them to commit atrocious acts against their fellow man in the name of their "Lord".After the homicide, there is a scene which shows two very different kinds of sermons- a sermon which scares and threatens God's children, and a sermon which comforts them in their time of need and empathizes with the victim.
I personally enjoyed this flick, since gay in society are targeted everyday and in some Islamic ones executed. The world and humanity in general have far to go in live and let live. Now, as for the flick the two young gay men were not the bigot's stereotype, a half male half female person dressing in feather. The two young professionals appear to love each other, but the script and theme of the flick don't really allow very much character development. Maybe this is comparing grapes with bananas, but this is not Brokeback Mountain. The twist in the end may leave some persons such as myself wondering if justice was really done. It amounted to a slick vigilantism, but gave the story a satirical irony all its own.You more than likely will find this an OK movie, not a great one. See it anyway on DVD.
Greating's from Toronto. I went to see Hate Crime a couple times while it played here. The questions and answers do not lie in whether or not it is a "GAY FILM" or a "Gay Guy Get's Revenge".It's about yet another "Religious Based Hatred ". As a gay community we had better start holding our Faith Leader's accountable for the continued festering of bias, intolerance, social injustice. And as a straight community you ought to take a close look at what your children are being led to believe ,wheather at school, home ,church,or socially.Hate Crime is a brilliant depiction of the times we continue to live in,with Religious intolerance and condemnation of anyone or anything that does not fit in with the strategy of Divine power and control. Are we not strong enough as a people and one race under humanity to insist that our Religious Leader's and politicians 'practice what they preach '.Good on Hate Crime.People ,who are teaching your children to hate ?Not the gay community. I would urge anyone from Toronto to LA ,see or at least research Hate Crime.Judge it for how it makes you feel about where we are socially.Take one week and listen to people all around you as you live your life.Explore what makes people say ,i hate him ,her,it ,they .Go back and read about or see Hate Crime again. Are your original feelings or fear's your's or did someone teach you them? It's easy to hate and i believe Hate Crime will force you think LIKE IT OR NOT.
I saw this film at the North Carolina Gay and Lesbian Film Festival and found it to be very good (even if sometimes somewhat predictable). Within the first 15 minutes or so, I had figured out who committed the crime. While I found the film to be of good quality, I also found it to be a bit disturbing. It seemed to want to show real Christianity as a stark contrast to hate-mongering fundamentalism, and for that it should be praised. But while it took great effort to show that there are Christians who aren't filled with hate and intolerance, it seemed to glorify attempts at revenge. I found the incongruency to be quite disturbing. It'd be a really good conversation starter.
