A lot more amusing than I thought it would be.
When a movie has you begging for it to end not even half way through it's pure crap. We've all seen this movie and this characters millions of times, nothing new in it. Don't waste your time.
Although I seem to have had higher expectations than I thought, the movie is super entertaining.
I only embarked on this movie because I had a romance my self on Santorini in the spring of 1982 (same year the film was shot). The goal of my aspirations then, besides studying architecture, was to get laid by the fair and beautifull freshman Pernille, who was asigned as my partner, during two weeks of hard core measurement, sketching and fotography. Didn´t get laid, at least not that year, so it was nice to experience in the movie, someone who did. Apart from that I was somewhat disappointet about the plot, if it even makes sence using such a fine word for the script. In short: beautiful emptiness and a nice backflash to Santorini, once a remote and charisssed pearl, now a ... I don´t know ... excessive tourism is a tougt master. The airport opened that same year 1982. Then came aids and the whole love-scene changed. Maybe this is the greatest thing about Summer Lovers, that it shows how carefree life could be, back then before aids.
Adonis-like Peter Gallagher (as Michael Pappas) and gorgeous blonde girlfriend Daryl Hannah (as Cathy Featherstone) go to the Greek islands, for a hot vacation. Despite their youth and beauty, the couple feels their sexual sparkplug needs recharging. Ms. Hannah reads a "How to " book, and introduces some bondage and candle wax into the relationship. But, after seeing sexy French sunbather Valérie Quennessen (as Lina), Mr. Gallagher has a better idea! Writer/director Randal Kleiser's "Summer Lovers" is more of a modeling than a film assignment for the three stars; but, to their credit, they try to act, as well as look, good. The lovely location footage is adorned by acres of young, tanned skin. A generous amount of nudity is on display. Soft core rock tunes and protruding Greek sculptures attempt to pound home a point, but there isn't much going down, here. And, the leading ladies never really hook up, on-screen.It's nice to see veteran babe Barbara Rush (as Jean Featherstone) and former "Lucy"-extra Carole Cook (as Barbara Foster) give the storyline a kick the pants, when they discover the ménage à trois. Ms. Rush and Ms. Cook are always an asset. Hans van Tongeren, who was a promising young actor, has a good supporting role (as Jan Tolin); sadly, he committed suicide around the time this film was released. These interesting asides don't make the film anything greater than lightweight fluff, however.**** Summer Lovers (1982) Randal Kleiser ~ Peter Gallagher, Daryl Hannah, Valérie Quennessen
Summer is the time to be free, a time to let loose, and a time to find love. In "Summer Lovers", two young lovers go to the Greek Isles to find love and adventure. Peter Gallagher and Daryl Hannah star as a couple who go to the Greek Islands to search beneath the beauty of the country, and the art of the culture. During that period of time both of them meet Lina(Valerie Quennessen) a archaeologist from France who has he own issues. There's plenty of sexual energy, sensual tension, and lots of laughs in-between. All three did everything together: saw The Stooges, swam and sun together, ate, bathed, and shared each other hobbies. When Lina's issues surfaces, the couple began to worry about her. They almost left the island without her. Since they all had fun, why not continue throughout the last day. One lost his father, one lived is lifestyle that's not her, the other has trouble being close to people. All of them have one thing in common: stability! A very fine movie, lots of fun, wonder, and excitement. 4 out of 5 stars!
I saw this movie originally over 20 years ago. I have never forgotten it. If that is a gage of a movie, then I guess it is a "10." But this one certainly has flaws.I don't care about the flaws of this movie, though. I have wanted to go to Greece since seeing this movie 20 years ago. The landscapes and scenery are breathtaking. That alone makes this movie worth seeing.I also liked the sexual adventurousness of the film. Not from a "it makes me horny" perspective but just the openness that the characters have. There are dumb, trite parts to the love story, but when you are basking on the beaches and sun of Greece, who cares?
