Such a frustrating disappointment
It's entirely possible that sending the audience out feeling lousy was intentional
While it is a pity that the story wasn't told with more visual finesse, this is trivial compared to our real-world problems. It takes a good movie to put that into perspective.
The biggest problem with this movie is it’s a little better than you think it might be, which somehow makes it worse. As in, it takes itself a bit too seriously, which makes most of the movie feel kind of dull.
Matt LeBlanc leads a commando squad into Nazi Germany to steal a copy of the enigma machine. Co-starring Eddie "I'm an action transvestite" Izzard this was a long time coming to the US. I have no idea if it ever got a theatrical release, but I'm sure it it did it lost money. this isn't to say the movie is bad, its not really, its just too run of the mill, guys in dresses aside. What can I say this is a situation ripe with comedy that doesn't really hit enough comedic moments. To be sure the action is fine and the film making is good, the problem is its so by the numbers that I could wander in and out while it was on and not feel I was missing something. Its like Matt LeBlanc's character who almost completes every mission he's on, its almost a good movie, thats almost funny. Put downs aside its worth a look if you like World War 2 movies, especially ones that are more than a bit off beat (even while remaining completely run of the mill). That should confuse you completely.
ATQM was amusing, but what made the movie was Eddie Izzard as Tony. A few of his lines were so funny, you have to wonder if they were ad-libbed. Now, this is not the greatest movie ever made by any means. For one thing, Matt LeBlanc makes a very unattractive woman :-P. However, the characters are likable and the script is at times hysterical and at other times very heart wrenching. James Cosmo, whom I had dismissed early on in the film as being simply silly comic-relief, turned out an incredibly poignant performance. The female lead is sassy and strong while at the same time very vulnerable and traumatized by her circumstances. I was surprised, but pleased, at how strongly the story dealt with homo-, hetero-, and bisexual characters that all got along quite well. If you dislike either Eddie Izzard (say it isn't so!) or Matt LeBlanc, then you should avoid ATQM. Otherwise, enjoy! :-)
This film is worth seeing for some very simple reasons. In this WWII movie Germans speak German throughout the movie. They only speak English when they capture English people. ...Which doesn't happen very often. All the people in the movie who speak German do so very well, good casting of Germans to play Germans and English speaking for English speaking roles. All German sequences are not translated into English using part of the screen.Despite all the flak (pun intended) Matt LeBlanc does play well throughout the movie, and the bunch of people in their silly roles makes sense in the last 10 minutes of the movie, but it is rather comical until then. Enjoy it.Despite many details about life in Berlin at the end of WWII the movie has a major drawback, the reason for the silly outfit only becomes apparent at the end and if you leave before the end you will not think of it as such a great movie. I find it difficult to change the plot to suit people who would leave their seat midway, but after 25 minutes you really should stay. For the WWII film buffs out there are most likely a few oversights, but on the whole I enjoyed the movie on its own set of details.I expected a movie like this with LeBlanc to be a comedy, with a few minor plot changes and LeBlanc and his supports replaced with female ditto it would have earned a 9. I gave it 8 because it is a comedy which has all the details to pull off a straight drama but fails to deliver 100% on that account.
As a die-hard Eddie Izzard fan, I saw this on Sky last year purely because he was in it.Although there are moments where disbelief isn't just suspended but actually needs to fly, this is not an easily forgettable piece of curiosity Euro-fluff.Erudite, surprising, challenging and genuinely moving, it gives all the central characters enough play to not just be foils to Matt LeBlanc's ill-at-ease, super-macho American.Overall, well made and worth the time and trouble of getting hold of a copy...
