Very well executed
I like movies that are aware of what they are selling... without [any] greater aspirations than to make people laugh and that's it.
The performances transcend the film's tropes, grounding it in characters that feel more complete than this subgenre often produces.
There is, somehow, an interesting story here, as well as some good acting. There are also some good scenes
I like this movie, maybe it's not the best of Almodovar but it's the first containing all the themes that he will explore. It's a movie about freedom, the new freedom acquired by Spanish, Franco is dead and now they can do whatever they want, even bad taste jokes. It's the beginning of "la Movida",now they can criticize stupid cops with their macho mustache, now they can urinate where they want... I like it because it's the awakening of Spain, with all the excess possible, with all it's qualities and defaults. this movie is a sort of coming out,Spain have the right to do what it want to do. It's the first spit against pseudo-morality against the wall erected by Franco all over Spain. It's a punk movie.
Life in the underground could be horrible, and "Pepi, Luci, Bom y otras chicas del monton" proves it. In this way, the film has a good topic, but at th end, i think ... it doesn't achieve it. Really, i thought than "Pepi, Luci, Bom y otras chicas del monton" (after all, the title is very creative)will another of that funny films ... but, don't. The story of "Pepi, Luci, Bom y otras chicas del monton" is about Pepi, Lucy and Bom. Pepi, a victim of a rape by the husband of Luci that is the girlfriend of Bom (Bom is friend of Pepi), want revenge. That three women become friends. The film is very dark, i think, because some scenes are like that, dark. The movie has the funny parts, but after all, with a little decadent "thing" that makes it very uncomfortable, because makes it see like a good thing. But, well, i cant blame it because that was the life of people who lives in th "underground" world. There is a thing, that i love of "Pepi, Luci, Bom y otras chicas del monton" after all, and is the funny narration and the publicity mind of Pepi when we see their commercials. After all...*Sorry for the mistakes ...well, if there any
While playing with her Superman's cards in her apartment, Pepi (Carmen Maura) is visited by her neighbor and dirty policeman, who saw her vases with a plantation of marijuana on the window, rapes her and she is not arrested. Pepi plots revenge and calls her punk friends, and they mistakenly beat the policeman's twin brother up along the night on the sidewalk of a street. Pepi introduces her punk singer friend Bom (Alaska) to the policeman's masochistic wife Lucinda (Luciana), and when Bom urinates on her face, she falls in love for Bom and leaves her husband. Pepi, Luci and Bom go to underground concerts, bars and parties, but when the policeman meets Luci alone, he beats her up and she returns to him, while Pepi and Bom stay together."Pepi, Luci, Bom y Otras Chicas del Montón" has not been released in Brazil and I saw this low budget movie in Spanish without subtitles, therefore I understood only parts of the dialogs. The first Almodóvar's feature is a calling card of his style: irreverent, twisted, bright, tacky, shabby, outrageous, hilarious, underground, a kind of Spanish version of John Waters. The women, as usual, have strong lead roles. The colors are very alive, and the costumes the most weird as possible. I hope to have a chance to see this movie with Portuguese or English subtitles to have more fun with a fully understanding of the details of the lines. My vote is six.Title (Brazil): "Not Available"
"However, you begin to disappoint with the first dialog (silly and absurd, no provocative), and it's better if we don't talk about the papers and acting (what happened to great Carmen Maura?!!)." I totally disagree with that, this movie is great, full of references to other great directors, which I guess the person who wrote this comment failed to see.The actors are simply great, and act in the most purely Almodovar-John Waters way, making all the dialogs hilarious, playing with language (changing register in the same sentence from the highest to the lowest, making absurd speeches, from the point of view of the linguistics) and intonation, which I think is the greatest tool used by almodovar in his films.Again, he rises daily life and common problems to the absurdity, by magnifying them, making us laugh at our own problems. One of his greatest movies, in his purest style, which he greatly used again in his latest film "volver".
