This day-in-the-life cult comedy focuses on a group of friends working at Sully Boyar's Car Wash in the Los Angeles ghetto. The team meets dozens of eccentric customers -- including a smooth-talking preacher, a wacky cab driver and an ex-convict -- while cracking politically incorrect jokes to a constant soundtrack of disco and funk. Some of the workers find romance as the day moves along, but most are just happy to get through another shift.

Excellent and certainly provocative... If nothing else, the film is a real conversation starter.
"Car Wash" is a film that is really hard to describe when it comes to plot. In some ways, it's a lot like the later "Barbershop" films but with a lot less depth as well as a bit like "American Graffiti" for Black Americans. However, the film is great for anyone who remembers the 70s--especially if they love the soul music of the time. That's because Rose Royce's soundtrack is VERY enjoyable and you can't help moving your feet as you watch the film. The picture is a semi-plot less story about a single day at a car wash in Los Angeles. It's made up of LOTS of little vignettes--s few which were pretty funny and one or two that were poignant. While a few of the bits fell pretty flat (such as the Richard Pryor cameo), overall the good outweighs the bad. Particular standouts in the film are Ivan Dixon (a fine, fine actor who is great here but also is unfortunately known most for "Hogan's Heroes" and not fine films like "Nothing But a Man" as well as the many shows he directed) and Franklin Ajaye--though they were all pretty enjoyable. My feeling is don't try to look for a lot of depth or story--just sit back and soak it all in, as it's like a flashback to the funky 70s. In other words, a nice glimpse into the time and a wide array of ethnic characters with a wide array of hopes and dreams.I've seen this film a few times (the last time was tonight) and for folks my age or a bit older (I'm nearly 50), it's a nice bit of nostalgia.By the way, look for the character 'Lloyd' (part of a singing duo)--this is Otis Day from "Animal House"! It's also a treat seeing Antonio Fargas (Huggy Bear from "Starsky & Hutch") as a gay transvestite! It's also nice to see the old-time actor Clarence Muse in the film as well in one of his final films.
I saw this when it came out, and have watched it again many times over my life. I watched it again last week, and both my 10yo and 6yo sons love it. It is well written, photographed, and has a great score along with great memorable lines that is and are all very specific to the times. I highly suggest watching it to anyone who hasn't seen it yet. I also predict that no one can watch it and NOT turn up the audio when the signature song "Car Wash" comes on. I also predict that many millions have herd and love the song and never saw the movie. Of course it is great to see both Richard Pryor and all the other great actors of the times in it. I recorded it on my DVR and the kids want to see it at least once a week now.
I first watched this film when i was about 10 years old and have loved it ever since.A great film with loads of fun lines. This is a well under rated movie and should be recognised for its comical brilliance.Although Richard Pryor is on the front cover of the DVD/Video, he only plays a small but great part in the film. Antonio Fargas plays an eccentric gay man with some great one liners. If you enjoyed The Blues Brothers movie then give this a try, although is not at-all like TBB movie it has the same comical feel. This movie screams "THE SEVENTIES" with flares and Afro's galore. In my opinion this is one of the best films from the 70's.
car wash is a hilarious 1976 comedy about a car wash, duh!and the zany people that work there and the off the wall customers that go there. comedians Richard pryor,George Carlin, and professor Irwin Corey have small but important roles, and if you seen the edited TV version Danny devito and Brooke adams turn up.for some strange reason they were cut out of the theatrical version.why ill never know.watch for pre-starsky and hutch Antonio fargas as a drag queen, and director bill duke.also Melanie mayron(thirty something)maybe soon they will release a special edition DVD with the Danny devito and Brooke adams scenes.i have the cheap good-times video version.also in the movie is the singing group;the pointer sisters.personally i liked car wash.there's a scene with butter on the ceiling that just cracks me up,because it takes me back to my childhood.and who can forget the theme song?i give car wash 8 out of 10.
