Dr. Clayton Forrester figures he can rule the world if he deadens his subjects' brains by making them endure terrible movies. Exploiting his access to nearby satellite-dwellers Mike Nelson and his robot pals, Crow T. Robot and Tom Servo, Forrester makes them watch "This Island Earth", a cheesy 1950s spaceship film. But when Mike and friends make funny comments throughout the movie and others that follow, Forrester's plan looks increasingly flimsy.

One of my all time favorites.
It's no definitive masterpiece but it's damn close.
How sad is this?
Unshakable, witty and deeply felt, the film will be paying emotional dividends for a long, long time.
An extremely poor introduction to Mystery Science Theater 3000 that I only lasted part way through when I was younger. It put me off checking the show out any further until recently. I don't know why it was passed off as a movie when it's just another episode of the show. As a TV show, MST3K is a cute way to watch silly old movies, and it's not so bad if the episodes are hit-and-miss.But to actually rate this as a movie in itself... it's basically equivalent to having a few friends come over, sit on your couch and make a bunch of dumb toilet jokes, 5% of which you find funny. I have more tolerance as an adult and I'm able to sit through and enjoy a movie despite unfunny interruptions. This Island Earth was a groundbreaking and spectacular film in its day, and MST3K didn't rise to the occasion for their 'Movie' at all. The laughs are simply too few and too far between. They've done better, so perhaps they just needed to spend more time on this one.
Mike Nelson and robots Crow T. Robot, Tom Servo, and Gypsy are orbiting the Earth. Evil scientist Dr. Clayton Forrester forces them to watch the movie 'This Island Earth' to break their will before submitting to him. They ridicule the bad movie as they watch it.This is based on a low-budget TV show. I've never seen it but it certainly isn't necessary for one to see it before seeing this movie. The concept is pretty simple. The jokes from the characters sitting in front of the movie screen are sometimes good. There are a few good laughs but mostly, it's a series of mild wisecracks. 'This Island Earth' is not the most horrible movie. There are some silly 50's sci-fi designs to ridicule. It's a lot of little chuckles. Outside of sitting in front of the screen, the crew has some adventures. It's nothing that funny. It might be more appealing to fans of the TV show. This is a relatively short movie. It feels like a TV episode and fans of the TV show would probably love this.
It doesn't matter that this movie is based off a successful T.V. show. It still is painful to watch. After a confusing and messy opening monologue by some creepy professor, for whatever reason the audience discovers that this movie takes place in space. And the spaceship our "heroes" are in looks suspiciously like male genitalia. I never quite understood whether that was intentional or not.The only thing sadder than the plot of this movie is the robots. Seriously, its like whoever designed them died half way through the process. I don't know if they're from the T.V. show or something (NO, I have never seen the show), but they are just utterly awful. One is something that I think resembles a crow, and the other is just a talking gumball machine. It creeped me out. What was the point of even having the robots, or the random guy who is friends with them? (By the way, was Trace Beaulieu blackmailed into playing Mike Nelson?) The comments made about the movie these characters are watching are juvenile and distracting. At one point, one of the robots makes a sound like a car engine when a car pans on screen. Where is the humor? What am I not getting?Halfway through the movie (that the characters are watching), the filmmakers decided to spare the audience by having the film reel break. While we wait for the creepy scientist guy to fix this, our useless heroes break the Hubble telescope. This is, in fact, their biggest accomplishment of the entire movie. The movie the creepy scientist makes them watch isn't that bad. It's actually pretty interesting, if a little cheesy. You'd think if the whole point of the movie was to make fun of another movie, whoever made this would've at least picked a bad movie to make fun of.The worst part is the ending. Usually, in the last ten minutes of a movie, loose ends are tied up. Nope. Not in this. Nothing happens. One star, because at least this movie was SHORT.
After hearing Mike Nelson's hilarious commentaries on 'Night of the Living Dead' and 'Carnival of Souls' I wanted more. Mike, Crow, and Tom are stuck in space on a ship and forced by Dr. Clayton Forrester to watch bad movies from the 50's. This time, they must watch This Island Earth. They come up with witty and wacky comments as they spoof the movie. This Island Earth is about a doctor named Cal Meacham who is asked for help from an alien named Exeter. Exeter and his group are from the planet, Metaluna. Cal and his ex-girlfriend try to help defend their planet in a war against the evil Zagons. If you love making fun of old movies, you'll love MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000: THE MOVIE!!!
