Good story, Not enough for a whole film
You know, in the past 30 years or so, no genre of films has held more interest to me than horror. Given that I was brought up in an abusive family, and was bullied throughout my adolescence, you'd think I'd shy away from violent imagery. I guess this is what they refer to as the Stockholm Syndrome? If it is, then yeah, I'm guilty of it.I knew going into Pumpkinhead II what I was expecting - a quick cash production off a so-so title. Hell, if Mimic can do it, and Species can do it, and Wishmater can do it, and Hellraiser can do it, then why not Pumpkinhead? Will Hollywood EVER make a sequel that's better than the original? I think I can count on one hand how many times that's been done. Pumpkinhead II, unfortunately, gets lumped in with all the other films that milk the original's title for money. There were so many clichés in PII that I swore, looking at it, I've seen it before. Maybe I did and it didn't register back then. There must be a reason for that, huh?
I just wanted to clarify that this film WAS IN THEATERS!!! It was not direct to video!!! IMDb IS WRONG!!! (as usual I have VHS of the TV ads for this film! It received a large amount of free media attention due to the current president's brother Roger Clinton appearing in the film.Once again, this was in theaters, it was NOT direct to video. As proof I can break out my complete VHS of 'All My Children' for 1993 and show you the ads for this film! It was in theaters! This film is in fact a very poor follow up to Stan Winston's cult classic. It does not contain any of the characters from the first film. The story is merely a rehash of the original. A woman in run over by city slicker teens and a witch conjures the demonic monster Pumpkinhead to kill them.So it's just like the first film sans the good FX and photography.
Pumpkinhead II (1994) * (out of 4) Horrid sequel to the 1989 cult favorite has a new sheriff (Andrew Robinson) moving to town where his teenage daughter (Ami Dolenz) gets mixed up with four bad apples and soon the five of them bring back the evil demon Pumpkinhead who of course goes on a killing spree. It seems the demon is avenging the death of a deformed boy but the sheriff and daughter must try to find a way to stop him. This "sequel" really doesn't have any connection to the first film so in many ways one really could look at this as a standalone entry. No matter how you want to look at it it's hard to argue that this is a horrid little film that has very little going for it. I think the worst thing is without question the screenplay, which seems to confuse itself from time to time. As with many low-grade horror movies, the screenplay here forgets to write any interesting characters and instead we just get a bunch of stupid stereotypes and all of them are fighting to see which one can be the most annoying. The five teenagers are all extremely annoying and it's impossible to care for any of them and that includes the so-called good ones. Even worse is that the screenplay throws in this stupid backstory that never really goes anywhere and you can't help but roll your eyes as the evil demon tries to be shown as a "good" guy just trying to avenge something bad. One of the most annoying things about this film is that for the life of me I couldn't figure out why the teens wanted to mess with this demon. I mean, they're shown as simple, pot-smoking idiots but why go after a demon? Oh, that's right, so that people would rent this sucker from their video stores. The performances are pretty bland with some of the actors delivering their lines so poorly that you'd think they were just making fun of the actual film. Robinson comes off the best in his part and there's some good eye candy but this here can't save an otherwise worthless film.
This is a rather late straight-to-video sequel to the Stan Winston movie "Pumpkinhead" from 1988, that wasn't even a big commercial success in the first place. The first movie already wasn't too great but this movie also adds very little and can hardly be called an improvement. It's really not an exciting or interesting movie to watch. The movie doesn't know to build up well and it doesn't seem to be able to handle its horror. Of course it also isn't being helped much by its story that provides very little originality. It's a movie that got made without too much imagination and true creativity. Even the good looking monster comes across as often being ridicules, mainly because he too often gets featured too prominently. The story fills the movie with some uninteresting characters and the movie is perhaps also missing a true, good main character. Also none of the actors really impress within their roles, which can be expected of course from a straight-to-video horror-flick. But its main-story remains really the main reason though that the movie never truly works out the way it's supposed to. It's formulaic, uninteresting and just dragging too much in parts because it doesn't seem to be able to make choices. It's still a rather good looking movie. It at least doesn't have a cheap B-movie look over it and the movie does feature some gore, however not really enough to please the average genre fan. It's easily a sequel and genre movie that you can do without.4/10http://bobafett1138.blogspot.com/
