Good movie but grossly overrated
It's fun, it's light, [but] it has a hard time when its tries to get heavy.
Let me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.
This is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a very long time. You have to go and see this on the big screen.
This movie is full of photo imagery that makes it suspenseful and a compelling drama. I feel like it's one of those movies you need to sit in a booth by yourself and watch it to fully be engulfed in the story. The acting is okay, but the story line is good and compelling. Phoenix has nothing to do with the city in Arizona, so if you are thinking about that then just get it out of your mind. The superstitious nature of the characters keeps you on the edge of your seat. The photo booth scene was the best. I highly recomend renting this, it is definitely worth it!
I have never watched a good drama/crime movie. It was on my local television back then in my high school years and I watched it when I was 15. Now I watched it again after 12 years and yes, again: This is the best crime drama movie ever. This kind of friendship turns into a ruin! How can it happen. Oh, you better watch it if you are wondering. And lastly, I was about to cry when I saw that cockroach going to freedom in the end.10/10 Would watch, again.
"Phoenix" is a hidden gem. I've seen it over five times. For some reason, it never gets old.Harry (Liotta) is a cop with a gambling problem. He can't stop. He owes money to "Chicago" (Tom Noonan) and he if he doesn't pay up, he dies. Harry's partners Henshaw (LaPaglia) and Nutter (Baldwin) are dirty and are becoming "collectors" to bookie Louie (Giancarlo Esposito). Harry needs money fast and the only way is to rob Louie. Everybody goes along with the plan until there's a double cross. There's not a lot of action in the movie until the end, but it's not needed. Ray Liotta is excellent in the movie. But the supporting cast steals it from him. LaPaglia is fantastic as Henshaw. He makes the character come alive. Baldwin, Esposito, Kari Wuhrer, and Anjelica Huston all get their time to shine."Phoenix" is a gritty crime movie that Liotta and LaPaglia fans must see.For more insanity, please visit: comeuppancereviews.com
I saw this movie at an art-house theater here in L.A. and it's too bad that it's theatrical run was very limited because it truly is a wonderful film with great all around performances, a tight script and wonderful job by the director. I happen to see this film just recently again on cable and looking at it now I have to say that it was probably ahead of it's time. Many of the faces you see in this film have gone on to become big stars. But let's not also forget how the director was able to blend and mesh the rough edges and desert heat of Phoenix with the narrative. This was a film that kept you glued to the screen with not a dull moment. There were no cheesy lines or ridiculous dialogue that makes many films of this genre fail. Phoenix succeeds in every way.
