It's the kind of movie you'll want to see a second time with someone who hasn't seen it yet, to remember what it was like to watch it for the first time.

Like most food documentaries, Food Matters is incredibly biased. All the "experts" seem to have a unanimous opinion that pesticides, GMOs and pharmaceutical companies are the root to all evil, we can however, according to the people in the documentary, change this by eating healthier foods. And do not forget your supplements that is continuously mentioned as a part of a healthy diet in the film!Conspiracy theories explain why studies on supplements (they mostly talk about vitamin c) usually do not show any benefits; the government is hiding the studies! The music can be described as mysterious and I am getting the impression that they want me to think; "Wow, I didn't know that, this is so scary!".They have some good points like that doctors hardly have any education in nutrition and that people should spend more money on food. They also mention that we should eat more healthy foods like vegetables, and have about one sentence mentioning exercise being good for our health. The rest however, is pure nonsense, that cannot be backed up by science.Statements like "cooked food reacts as a toxin in our bodies", and "superfood makes you live longer" are mentioned. They do not mention that in some foods cooking actually remove the toxins and that there is no evidence that "superfood" is any healthier than regular healthy food like your everyday fruits and vegetables, the difference being that the "superfood" is a little bit more expensive and can be bought on their website. They also state that the drug companies cannot get any money if people are not sick, so we should buy vitamin supplements on their website instead! I do not want to defend drugs or pharmaceutical companies in any way, but if you want to improve your diet to become more healthy, you should focus on eating more healthy food like fruits and vegetables (it does not have to be the "super" goji berry), not supplements. To summarize this I believe this documentary to be pretty bad considering that it is very biased, not based on science and they continuously seem to try to scare people into thinking that they will die if they do not start to consume supplements. If you want to improve your health and learn more about food there are far better documentaries out there.

A very dangerous film. DO NOT LISTEN TO IT. I am a REAL Biochemist (degree and all) and I can say for sure MOST OF this film is a lie.Yes certain things are true such as B3 and depression but 11,500mg of B3 (Niacin) a day is NOT HEALTHY. The movie leads you on to believe that the person needs it because they are deficient. The truth could actually be that the person is actually not deficient and that the receptor in the brain for B3 is genetically hampered and doesn't respond well (or even none at all of which the next part wouldn't matter) to B3 unless massive doses (high molarity) is present which will decrease the Kd (dissociation constant). You could end up killing your family member doing this by OVER DOSING them. People have to understand that Niacin is a CHEMICAL and like all Chemicals they have side EFFECTS, so lets review them shall we? Primary side effects contain (hey we've seen this before right?) Blotching, Fever, dryness (Psoriasis), muscle damage, and hepatoxicity (liver damage to the extent of failure). also if you don't believe that you can always check an accredited medical site such as Mayo Clinic. Thank god the person listened to their psychiatrist and stopped that ludicrous regimen. Why its not healthy even though the movie people say it is. The thing is when you have a high molarity of anything other reactions in the body can and will take place. This can make things very dangerous, and also the reason why many nutritionists have no idea what's going on in the human body. Nutrition is mostly PREVENTIVE and slightly CURATIVE. Medicine is the opposite and that is why people who get cured get sick again because they don't learn the PREVENTIVE MEASURES or decline to do them. There is a Biochemist I know in fact that takes Lipitor to reduce their cholesterol even though they know healthy eating would be better just cause they hate exercise and wants to eat what they want despite knowing and admitting its bad for them. That is also quite shameful and a poor example to others. The whole thing about vitamin C and cancer is true to an extent. Vitamin C is an antioxidant and can prevent cancer (notice preventive!), so why don't we eat more of it? Because it can cause cancer at HIGHER MOLARITIES. There are hundreds of accredited documented papers that discuss this. They are hard to find (but they are there) because of all the science Jargon that I'm used to but It has been shown in: Podmore ID, Griffith HR, Karl HE, Mistry N, Mistry P & Lunec J (1998): Vitamin C exhibits pro-oxidant properties. Nature 392, 559–560.Cai L, Koropatnick J & Cherian MG (2001): Roles of vitamin C in radiation-induced DNA -damage in presence and absence of copper. Chem. Biol. Interact. 137, 75–88.Guidarelli A, De Sanctis R, Cellini B, Fiorani M, Dacha M & Cantoni O (2001): Intracellular ascorbic acid enhances the DNA single-strand breakage and toxicity induced by peroxynitrite in U937 cells. Biochem. J. 365, 509–513.What happens is metals such as iron can be reduced, oxidized, and then re-reduced, in a process called redox cycling that can generate reactive oxygen species and THOSE ARE BAD. Don't read the ones by Linus Pauling as they are biased (obviously) and were even cited as an embarrassment by the National Cancer Institute. Linus Pauling (discussed in this film) who was pretty much the founder of megadosing vitamin C took around 12,000mg of vitamin C A DAY and DIED of PROSTATE CANCER. If it was so miraculous why didn't it save him? Because it doesn't work. Now the film also states that modern medicine and scientist didn't try megadosing. Well, that's not true either. The Mayo Clinic which is a NONPROFIT organization tried to replicate Linus Pauling's work with megadosing and cancer and found that they COULD NOT REPLICATE the results even with THREE subsequent trials.Source: Cabanillas, F (2010). "Vitamin C and cancer: what can we conclude--1,609 patients and 33 years later?". Puerto Rico health sciences journal 29 (3): 215–7.Everything you eat causes cancer because of the superoxide anion radicals (O2*-) formed in the mitochondria, but is also reduced to H2O2 (hydrogen peroxide) and other reactions with OH and so on and so forth. Now Vitamin C pulls away those oxygen radicals. That's how it works to SAVE you, but again too much is not a good idea.Anyways, all foods have certain effects that negate one form of cancer and cause another. The trick is a BALANCE. Even grass fed beef while known to cause colon cancer and testicular cancer in men, prevents a slew of other cancers, diabetes, and other problems with its Conjugated Linoleic Acid only found in grass fed beef not corn fed beef. Again balance is key. Eat but in moderation. In conclusion this film is trash and an abomination to real scientists and again if it was so true then why at the end of the credits do they pretty much say, "DO NOT DO THIS!" It is insulting, dangerous for the average viewer, and full of lies and worst of all false hopes.

I am in the natural health field, so I KNOW there is a HUGE difference between what is taught in the medical nutrition classes and what is taught in the natural nutrition classes. Now, colleges do not label their nutrition classes to be "medical nutrition", it just simply says "nutrition". But, I have taken nutrition in college and 50% of the information I heard was false, but I kept my mouth shut because the teacher is only teaching what SHE learned from HER medical nutrition teacher. So yes, the reviewer above thinks the documentary is propaganda just because they are basing it off what their personal knowledge is from the college they've been to. Trust me, my nutrition class talked about diet and vitamins, but it was so nonsensical that I couldn't believe that all the "to be" nurses in the class were buying to the information. Go to a holistic center (a REAL holistic center, not the medical ones trying to cover their ass and still receive money) and take a real course. Or even, if you are Christian read the BIBLE, and it will tell you to eat RAW fruits and vegetables and it will discuss that the people were vegan and vegetarian until the flood came and wiped out the vegetation, and only then did they begin to eat meat. This documentary is trying to bring you the truth. Why? Because they want YOU to be your own doctor, and they want YOU to do your own research, and not listen to everything you hear from your doctor. If that includes researching information you hear in this documentary SO BE IT! Do the research before you make your conclusions. Now, my naturopathic teacher who taught me had a story. Her mother was dying in the hospital, and her doctor was trying to save her life with medication. My teacher had a book of medication and how they can interfere with each other, so when the doctor tried to recommend a new medication my teacher looked it up in the book and said, "It says here that these two medications can cause death". So the doctor took the book and started looking up what medication would be appropriate for her mother. Nothing saved her life of course, but the end of the story turns out like this: This medical doctor took a course with my NATUROPATHIC doctor, and told her "thank you so much. Working every day in the health field, you begin to lose sight of what is important. After many years of working here, I forgot how the body actually worked." So, if a medical doctor isn't told the absolute truth about vitamins or diet, and then loses sight of the REAL function of the body... What do you expect to happen to our people? If you are in the medical health field, do yourself a favor and don't bother watching this documentary. The medical field is not willing to compromise, and neither is the natural field. There really is no harmony between these dividing divisions. So, for those of you in the middle here, just watch the documentary and research the information for yourself. Don't strictly go by what the other reviewer said, and don't strictly go by what I say. YOU are your own doctor; YOU need to be responsible for YOUR OWN health; YOU need to do the research.

This movie is virtually full of crap and only the gullible will believe this garbage. Now not all of it is bad since the info on Spirulina is fairly accurate, so there is some truth. Unfortunately the rest of it is pure trash, "doctors don't believe in vitamins"?. I've never met a single colleague that has never taken vitamins and their prescription lightly. What medical schools did these guys attend, one of the main things you learn is about vitamins and their benefits, not to mention in my board exams there were plenty of questions based on vitamins alone. We as health professionals don't ask about the persons diet? Again that is a sheer lie, anyone that is one of the first things you ask when trying to figure out the origin of a problem.Watch this for what it is entertainment, but do not take it as truth because frankly this is one of the worst documentaries I've ever seen. This move is full of lies and cherry picking cases, because lets face it there are good (majority) and bad doctors. The film makers had an agenda and picked up nuts and liars. Notice how there was at no point anyone to offer a counter point in the move, a key piece in serious documentaries. Everyone one they've picked all spout the same thing, not to mention the majority from the one man in his living that was flat out lying and distorting the truth from the beginning. Sadly I see that a couple of the reviews actually believe this crap and I feel sorry for them. If you actually believe that the medical field is as bad as this movie says it is, then there is no hope for you. One of the few things they got right is that we are what we eat. Unfortunately unlike what the movie would have you believe, pharmaceutical company executives are not forcing people to eat McDonalds, Pizza Hut, KFC, etc at gun point. Obesity is a problem because people eat crap regardless whether you tell them to change their diet for good.
