Strong and Moving!
Excellent, Without a doubt!!
A great movie, one of the best of this year. There was a bit of confusion at one point in the plot, but nothing serious.
This movie has been my hands down favourite for as long as I can remember. I originally had it home recorded on VHS and I cannot count the number of times it was watched until the tape finally snapped. I had received a DVD copy for Christmas one year along with a Rad Racing shirt. Not sure where it came from but I can definitely look into it if anybody requests. The movie itself is a great story of overcoming obstacles and working hard at what you really love to do. I enjoy the fact that it has the bad guy that isn't out to destroy the world and he becomes good in the end. You just don't see movies like this anymore these days. The movie is amazing and it also has a great soundtrack for its time. Still ready to "Break the Ice" whenever I need to pump up for something. The John Farnham songs are the best.
I feel that I should first of all reveal that I was a teenager (the target audience) when this movie was first released, but even as a youth the movie struck me as being something stupid. In the years that followed, I kept hearing over and over positive remarks about the movie from people like me who grew up in the '80s. So when I stumbled upon a copy of this movie at a thrift store recently, I thought I would finally give it a chance. Let's just say that when it came to this movie, my younger self was a lot smarter. First of all, the central plot is completely unoriginal - it's the standard underdog struggling against sabotage and other challenges to prove himself story, complete with characters you've also seen before (the spunky kid sister, the disapproving parent who eventually changes her opinion, etc.) What is worse is that this particular telling is especially slow, even though the movie was clearly cut down in the editing room to try and speed things up (which does lead to some unclear details.) But what about the BMX stuff, you may be asking. Well, while there are a handful of (mildly) impressive stunts here and there, I actually found most of the BMX stuff boring, despite the movie being filmed by a former stuntman. BMX doesn't have the speed of motorcycle racing, nor does it have the especially dangerous aspect of skateboarding. It's flat stuff, even in the so- called "Helltrack" climax. It's no wonder the distributor of this movie only gave it a limited theatrical release, and probably also explains why the current rights holders of the movie have not given the movie a DVD or Blu-ray release.
Well before X Games was even thought of or heard of "Rad" was in theaters. I was young when the movie came out and my memory of the entire movie is a bit hazy, but what I do remember was good. As young as I was when I watched it I would not have known good acting from bad, but I remember the cool stunts he was trying and his determination to do the back flip on the bike (which is a standard stunt now). Also, how could anyone forget the scene from the school dance where he did variable stunts to the song "Give me an Angel".Rad is most likely a cult classic if it is anything at all, very few have watched it and probably even fewer will remember it. It is another iconic symbol of the great 80's.
I cannot believe that this movie has not found its way to DVD as yet! Growing up, I watched this movie practically EVERY DAY after I got home from school!!! Now, I want it on DVD! If movies like North Shore can make it to DVD, I do not understand how, in today's era of extreme sports (which BMX helped start), that a movie about BMX racing is not available on DVD when it has got a large potential fan base!!! Please, release this CLASSIC film on DVD!!!! (I will continue to BEG for this movie until it is released!!!!)As for the film itself (in case you have not seen it) the movie depicts a great race (Helltrack) and is the story of a local kid who succeeds doing what he loves to do best. A great 80's soundtrack accompanies the film, and a couple of scenes of Lori Loughlin looking exceptionally HOT!
