When a movie has you begging for it to end not even half way through it's pure crap. We've all seen this movie and this characters millions of times, nothing new in it. Don't waste your time.

It was OK. I don't see why everyone loves it so much. It wasn't very smart or deep or well-directed.

Having recently watched two immaculately directed movies from each end of the 70s, the wild gore fest that is Fulci's, Zombie Flesh Eaters (1979) and the wondrous Tristana (1970) from Bunuel, I am thrust into the laid back, let it all hang out world of Hal Ashby. Both the other films it is clear that the director has a clear visual and complete control, even if they are starkly different films. Here Ashby delights it letting, things happen. Nicholson was clearly given his head and allowed to let things run, not only away from his director, but himself. Nevertheless there is something endearing about Last Detail and I'm sure its director would agree that a fixed notion of what was going to happen all the time would have ben too stifling for him. For me one result of this casual approach is that not everything works and the actors seem to be having more fun than me but maybe that's too harsh. Certainly worth seeing and influential in its own way. For good or bad.

This movie is without a doubt a comedy/drama. I loved it for the soul purpose of the three main actors. It was like watching lives unfold and then reality hits and then like the era they represent, they all three collide as a learning experience and or like one entity with three totally different perspectives on life issues and how to deal with it. This movie is a must see. Jack is Jack. The wild man of the silver screen with a control only he can tame. His character is wild. His performance is spot on. Loved this movie and you will too. Watch it!! I even stayed up 2 hours past my usual bed-time to watch it. There are parts in this movie that will definitely make you shake your head in disbelief but all in all, what is a movie without some added B.S. to help get to the next scene without totally destroying the whole movie and it's concept to guide us through what their intentions really are. Great movie!

Jack Nicholson in his early heyday. Four years after Easy Rider, and two years before One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. He carries the film, as intended. Otis Young was good here, as well as a young Randy Quaid. Interesting casting as Quaid towers over Nicholson and film composition usually frowned on that. Nice turn put in by Carol Kane in a small part. Pretty good photography of the wintry Northeast, and unobtrusive direction. Apparently this movie was packaged as a comedy at one time, but I found nothing funny about it. Seems like every aspect of the tale was basically tragic. Pretty decent film, overall. A lot of profanity, which was sort of the style in the early Seventies.

Buddusky (Jack Nicholson) and "Mule" Mulhall (Otis Young) are weary sailors assigned to escort young Meadows (Randy Quaid) from Norfolk to Portsmouth. Meadows tried to steal $40 from the Polio contribution box which is the favorite charity of the admiral's wife. They plan to take the slow route and save the per diem to spend on the way back. However they take pity on the poor sap Meadows who is about to spend 8 years in the brig. They take him to find some good times at the big city stops along the way. It's a bit meandering as a story but Nicholson gives a good performance. He's the undisputed star every time he's on the screen. Randy Quaid is playing a timid character. Sometimes he gets off a good laugh. In general, the movie is a slow moving comedy from director Hal Ashby with a few very good laughs.
