Highly Overrated But Still Good
The acting is good, and the firecracker script has some excellent ideas.
I enjoyed watching this film and would recommend other to give it a try , (as I am) but this movie, although enjoyable to watch due to the better than average acting fails to add anything new to its storyline that is all too familiar to these types of movies.
To the Bagby family, I'm truly sorry for your devastating loss. What happened to you should never happen to any other family. Please keep up the good work advocating for change in the system. To Kurt, thank you for making this truly heartfelt tribute to one of your best friends; the documentary was one of the most emotionally driven experiences that I ever witnessed. I feel like I know Andrew and Zachary even though I sadly have never met them; that's how powerful your movie is. It's a prayer for the human spirit and a memorial for the dead. Remembering our loved ones, and then sharing those memories keeps them alive even after the body has wasted into ashes. I'll never ever forget that lesson that your movie has taught me. Thank you for pressing onward and finishing your cinematic letter.
I was on YouTube watching a video called "10 documentaries you have to watch on Netflix" (or something like that) and this was one of them. The summary he gave of the film was basically 'guy makes film to Zachary about his dads murder', and at first I thought that it would be an OK movie. I thought that it would be simple and sweet. And it definitely wasn't what I thought it would be. Bad things about this film Its a bit to fast Some people would say the editing wasn't the best This film will make you angry (which could be a good thing to some people) You will cry (which, could also be a good sign to some people)Good things about this film It brings to light some problems you might not have known were even problems You will fell like you were apart of there family and were there as it happens You would never guess the endingThis is on Netflix and I think its a great movie, if I were you I would stop reading the reviews and go watch this movie right now.
This Documentary ranks in the top 3 documentaries of all time next to 'Thin Blue Line' and 'Man on Wire'. Some people may dispute my top 3 list, however I will argue why I think that Dear Zachary is better than the other two. Thin Blue Line was notable for exonerating a man from a wrongful conviction. Man on Wire is a real life heist movie with an incredible story about the World Trade Towers in New York.Dear Zachary encompasses two themes that mirror the aforementioned and combine into a greater narrative: the story of an evil murderous woman who was never properly convicted and a story of several terrible crimes that went unpunished and lead to the exposure of major dysfunction in the Canadian justice/legal system. This documentary is not for the weak of heart but for those interested in the film aspects, it is evident that the filmmaker has made a painstaking effort to assemble footage in a way that hurt his very soul to share with you. A more honest documentary has never been made.
10/10I never cried watching documentary until I watched this one, and when I have finished watching it, I watched it again. That is how good this documentary is. I even feel sad while writing this review, and I watched Dear Zachary 2 weeks ago.Unlike other documentaries, this documentary is very personal. The first reason Kurt Kuane made this is for Zachary Turner, the son of his dear friend who is murdered. You can feel how emotional Kurt Kuene narrated it.Dear Zachary at first wasn't intended for public viewing. Even so this documentary is well made, well written, and have great score. Greatest documentary I ever seen. The fact that I didn't know anything about Zachary Turner case, make this documentary feel like thriller with shocking twist. More shocking than most thriller out there. If you haven't watch this, you should. It works better if you didn't know anything about this case. You will end up in emotional roller coaster with this documentary.I am glad they pass Dear Zachary bill in Canada, I hope it could reduce the pain that Kate and David Bagby feel because of this tragedy.
