It's complicated... I really like the directing, acting and writing but, there are issues with the way it's shot that I just can't deny. As much as I love the storytelling and the fantastic performance but, there are also certain scenes that didn't need to exist.
In truth, there is barely enough story here to make a film.
The film's masterful storytelling did its job. The message was clear. No need to overdo.
The story, direction, characters, and writing/dialogue is akin to taking a tranquilizer shot to the neck, but everything else was so well done.
Didn't expect a lot - after watching movies for many years and using IMDb for the last 5 years plus - this is the first movie I felt compelled to comment on! Watchit!!! The plot was engaging without being too complicated for younger children. There was enough action to make it appeal to my 11 year old son and my 40-something year old husband! The characters were really well developed and we all felt a real affinity to all the mains! There were tears and laughter from all of us, with some real nail biting moments in the 1st 1/2 hour-it was a complete gem and to discover that it was an independent on a low budget was a real surprise-give this a view you will not regret it!! ;o)
A standout at the 2008 Daytona Beach Film Festival, ''The Flyboys'' deserves to be seen. Here's the review from Film Critic Jeff Farance:''The Flyboys'' 5 (of 5 stars)This is the sort of discovery that film festivals live for. As do festival audiences. To say it's a family film is to take nothing away from its maturity, its urgency and its adventure as two boys with a love of all things airborne become entwined in a mob plot to rip off a casino's cash haul by crashing the plane carrying it and its guards.A sprinkling of familiar faces (Stephen Baldwin, Tom Sizemore, Robert Costanzo) accent the fine performances by stars Jesse James and Reiley McClendon. But what's amazing is the total professionalism, including some palm-sweat-inducing aerial acrobatics and ground chase scenes, along with outstanding special effects. ''The Flyboys'' simply soars, and takes its audience along into the clouds for a breathtaking ride.
I viewed this movie tonight at the Daytona Beach Film Festival and was pleasantly surprised. This film had it all, adventure, action and great characters. The breathtaking aerial shots, fast paced action scenes, and character development all came together to create a truly entertaining film. In a Q&A with the director, I was amazed to learn that this movie was filmed with a 2 million dollar budget. I initially thought this was going to be a kids movie. However, the characters quickly drew me into their lives and the storyline touched not only my adult mentality but also took me back to my childhood sense of wonder. The relationship between the characters spanned all ages and reminded me the importance of friendship and family. Hats off to Rocco. I hope to see more of your work in the future. Thank you for making this film and for putting your heart and soul into it!!!
Flyboys is so well written that you are instantly drawn into the story and you never leave! The acting is exceptional, the sound mix and scoring is amazing. The cinematography is unbelievable! Can't imagine anyone not liking this film as it has something for everyone.. action, drama, excitement, comedy, romance, sadness.. Though it's not "child like" it is for the whole family. The story line is complex enough to keep your interest without adding unfinished ends that go nowhere. You won't see any "convenient" fixes like other movies when one "stumbles" on a clue to move the plot along. They also don't "reveal" the story though dialogue. When the world sees Flyboys it will surely become a classic. A must see!
