Highly Overrated But Still Good
The story-telling is good with flashbacks. The film is both funny and heartbreaking. You smile in a scene and get a soulcrushing revelation in the next.
Very good movie overall, highly recommended. Most of the negative reviews don't have any merit and are all pollitically based. Give this movie a chance at least, and it might give you a different perspective.
All the elements of "Love Object" can be found in other films, but the writer/director does a good job of building them into a surprising...and surprisingly creepy...film that's entirely his own. Throw in a few fake-outs, including a feint or two near the conclusion, and you end up with a very watchable and entertaining film. I really enjoy thrillers of this type and consider myself pretty blasé about most plot developments, but I have to confess that I said, "Oh, no...he's not going to do that, is he?" out loud several times while watching this. The direction is competent, even if fairly uninspired. It gets the job done. The acting is highly variable, though, and I have to blame the director a bit for this. It's clear that the leads can carry it off, if directed properly, but some scenes give the appearance of first takes. It's almost as if the actors are doing a run-through or a blocking take. Desmond Harrington is the most uniform, but even he stumbles a couple times. Rip Torn is surprisingly self-controlled and really adds to the film.I've always said that the essence of "creepy and unnerving" is NOT to show us people doing things that are unimaginable. It's to show us people doing things that leave us thinking, "I wonder if, under the right circumstances, I might do something similar." That's the essence of "Love Object." Recommended for fans of creepy psychological horror.
Sex dolls. Who doesn't like them. They're funny looking and you can have sex with them. Well I wouldn't but Bud Bundy and Kenneth Winslow would. Kenneth is your average, lonely worker drone. Due to a little prank a fellow work buddy pulls on him, he completely switches gears from lonely, nerd worker to sex-crazed doll humper. With a swipe of the old credit card and a deduction of 10,000 bucks, Ken is now living it up with one hot piece of plass-tic. Everything's going great with his new girl "Nikki". They have a sex-filled life and that void in Kenneth finally seems to be filled. But things fall apart when Ken realizes co-worker pal Lisa (who he made Nikki look like) is showing him some interest. He's now focusing more on Lisa than Nikki. And this is not sitting well at the Winslow household. People are going nuts, dolls are strangling people, tattoos on boobs....Ken needs to take control of the situation or things might get a little complicated. Find out what happens to Kenneth's girls, Rip Torn and Udo Kier in Love Object.Well, this is a movie that I heard is supposed to be pretty good, a sleeper if you will, since it's not very known. And I wouldn't be surprised if it does begin to become well known, I can see this little flick having a nice little following. Personally, I enjoyed Love Object more than I thought I would. It has some nice acting, and a neat little story that feels like a fresh breath of air. Even though the movie has probably been done before in some fashion. One thing that kept jumping out at me is the way Love Object was shot, it felt like it's a made for TV movie. Obviously it can't be since there's sex, nudity, violence and swears, but it felt like I was watching a Network movie.....if that makes any sense. Well anyways, Love Object was a pretty neat movie that is definitely worth checking out and it without a doubt falls into the realm of sleeper hits that became cult hits like May or Ginger Snaps. 7.5 outta 10
''Love Object '' starts looking an average movie, showing the weird and lonely Kenneth Winslow, a technical writer, who starts having a bizarre obsession by Nikki, a rubber sex doll that he ordered, while developing a crush in his assistant Lisa. Kenneth goes to the point of talking, arguing and even feeling "stalked" by Nikki, and that's when the bizarre things starts to happen in his behavior. The cool thing about this movie ,is the end, that is totally unexpected and the total opposite that you could believe that would happen. That's why I give this movie the nice vote of 7, because the plot itself, is very simple and nothing special. The good message present, is that many people who look 'normal' or calm, like Kenneth, can have bad intentions behind their acts and even act like maniacs, while others can make us have false judgments about them, but are good people, like Kenneth's landlord, who tries to help Lisa from Kenneth's sick ideas of transforming her into Nikki.
What is so scary about puppets? There have been a few movies that handled the human fear for the puppet (such as pin and child's play) but this movie is the absolute king of its genre, if you can call this a genre that is.The movie is about Kenneth, a frustrated and socially isolated young man who embarks on a strange sexual relationship with a love doll. The thing that I really liked about this movie is the music. It's very subtle and tells a lot about what is going to happen or gives you an unpleasant feeling. This is not a scary movie, although you will get goosebumps from time to time. I think in a certain way it's a very real movie about how people can drive themself mad. You see it all coming (at least I did) and I kept telling myself "OH GOD! HE'S NOT REALLY DOING THIS" but he was. It's a honest and shocking movie with a terrific ending.I am not going to spoil anything but you should watch this and then you must agree with me that the ending of this movie is the best part!. But still all of it is good, 10/10
