Don't Believe the Hype
best movie i've ever seen.
The thing I enjoyed most about the film is the fact that it doesn't shy away from being a super-sized-cliche;
It is a whirlwind of delight --- attractive actors, stunning couture, spectacular sets and outrageous parties. It's a feast for the eyes. But what really makes this dramedy work is the acting.
I hate that there is not a real full length feature surf movie with a Young Black Male Lead, showing the truth! That Not only do we as Blacks around the world surf but, that the surfing originated like everything else from Africa !!!! It is also demonstrated in a great Documentary "White Wash" Unfortunately not in this movie "Surf School" with Sisqó as the token Black guy who can't surf! just enforces White Supremacist American Racism ! It's sad because this stereotype makes Blacks locally and all people Locally or abroad think that it's true! I had a fellow Black guy tell me that I don't surf, When I just told him that I surfed before in Myrtle Beach,SC USA ! LOL So besides that,overall Great Movie: Performances by Characters and Story! Must Watch!
...What can I say about Surf School? In the history of teen/twenty-something comedies, there may never before have been a movie as cliché as Surf School. Following the genre formula to a tee, there are a ton of cheesy jokes, ridiculous situations, and good looking people wearing very very little. Three guys, Three girls, a quirky old couple, a veteran comedy actor making a cameo, it has it all, and it's absolutely as cheesy as it gets. The movie isn't funny, the story isn't good, and the acting is very bland. It was pretty much everything I expected when I added it to my queue. Sometimes you add these comedies and you find a gem, like National Lampoon's Barely Legal. Other times you get a "Surf School." It really is just a waste of time.
I'm from Austin but live in Costa Rica in the town Quepos next to where the movie was made. My friend Timo was in the background of one scene. I brought a copy back from the States and like 20 of us packed into a room to see it the first time. We laughed so hard we almost cried. the guy from Half Baked is like this surf kook we know here. Just a crazy ass guy. The girls were sooooooooo fly. We saw some of the blonde girls when they were in town making the movie and we got to see them topless in the movie. Way coool. They showed a few hot waves from an area here called Playitas. I surf there all the time. Movie's a trip and I laugh just thinking about some of the stuff the surf bum says.
I rented this for Harland Williams. I saw him perform in Phoenix last year and he was tooooooo funny. I love that kind of goofy humor and I thought he made this movie. The surf bum he played was hilarious with the Mahi Mahi line and the best was his line about stacking onion rings on his... The guys so crazy he's just a constant crackup. Then at the end when he talks all that nonsense in Hawaian or something I laughed so hard. He made the movie totally entertaining. I think he really created a unique surf bum. I'd never seen a character like that before. It was a good flick because of him. I also thought the old hippy couple were great. Kind of reminded me of Gomez and Mortisia in the Adams Family the way they're always making out. The movie was really different from most teen comedies and i dug it.
