Two strangers become dangerously close after witnessing a deadly accident. On a beautiful cloudless day a young couple celebrate their reunion with a picnic. Joe has planned a postcard-perfect afternoon in the English countryside with his partner, Claire. But as Joe and Claire prepare to open a bottle of champagne, their idyll comes to an abrupt end. A hot air balloon drifts into the field, obviously in trouble. The pilot catches his leg in the anchor rope, while the only passenger, a boy, is too scared to jump down. Joe and three other men rush to secure the basket. But fate has other ideas...

That was an excellent one.
Although I seem to have had higher expectations than I thought, the movie is super entertaining.
This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.
The movie turns out to be a little better than the average. Starting from a romantic formula often seen in the cinema, it ends in the most predictable (and somewhat bland) way.
On a beautiful cloudless day a young couple celebrate with a picnic. A hot air balloon drifts into the field,in trouble. The pilot catches his leg in the anchor rope, while the only passenger, a boy, is too scared to jump down. Joe and three other men rush to secure the basket.Just as they secure the balloon, the wind rushes into the field, and at once the rescuers are airborne. One man is lifted skywards. As Joe, Claire and the other rescuers watch this strangely beautiful sight, they see the man fall to his death.Ironically the balloon eventually lands safely, the boy unscathed. But fate has far more unpleasant things in store for Joe.Going to retrieve the body of the fallen man with fellow rescuer Jed, turns out to be a very bad move.Jed feels an instant connection with Joe--one that becomes ever more intense...From the upstart of the film, it has a very morose feel to it. Although he opening scene is in a beautiful setting, it almost feels dystopian, and the film has a bizarre futuristic feel to it.Craig and ifans are amazing in their roles, and the film begs a lot of answers, is Joe really all that mentally stable, is he sure about his sexuality, how much of Jed is reality, and how much is paranoia. The questions are answered in very subliminal ways, but the film is about a man, who is questioning his own status as a 'male' when it's clear he has lost his 'bottle' which may have caused the doctors death. It's an amazing movie, with great support, and one of the most beautiful yet disturbing opening scenes I have ever seen. The end shocks, and it leaves the viewer feeling very unsure about the future of the characters. It's very chic London, but very claustrophobic at the same time.An amazing film, cruelly ignored on initial release.
The opening scene of this film alone makes it worth watching - a stunningly photographed piece that sets the tone of domestic horror that will give the film its dramatic impetus. Like the serenely drifting balloon that belies the tragedy to come, the cinematography drives the film calmly yet compellingly towards its brutal climax. This is a film that has the courage of its conviction in terms of narrative pacing - there are some stiflingly slow scenes that never feel the need to speed up, instead taking pleasure in winding our nerves ever tighter round the characters' distressing situations.Daniel Craig arguably has more presence in this film with only a pair of spectacles than he would ever come to have whilst hidden behind bulging muscles and snappy cars as James Bond. Rhys Ifans works best in roles where he has the opportunity to have more of a tongue-in-cheek attitude to the character he is playing. Watching him in this film without any sense of his cutting irony, therefore, is unfortunately a slightly bland experience. At some moments, however, he does manage to display the kind of pitiable yet violent behaviour required for the role. This film's star turn is down to the people behind the character. Unfortunately, the best moments of the film are in the first five minutes - the film always struggles to live up to these chillingly enchanting opening moments.James Gill (Twitter @jg8608)
Without getting into supreme spoilers, Enduring Love opens so well and exhilaratingly I doubted if the movie could live up to it's superb beginning subsequently. The disappointing answer is - it didn't - not quite. There's a bit of stale air in the derangement and lost sanity of the main character. (spoiler) This is in no small part thanks to a clichéd stalker-esquire mood that grows tiresome. Why cant the main character simply goto the police and report the weirdo? Guess that must be too logical. Some of the better parts of the movie though involve the dialog and how it examines love and/or how the main character looks at it vs. his tormentor, lover, and class. Daniel Craig is an excellent actor and holds the picture together pretty well. The acting of the support is satisfactory. At the conclusion, you may feel a bit disappointed, but you can help wipe that away by recalling the first 15 min of the film - that alone makes the movie more than average fare.
Enduring Love is probably one of the most thrilling books I have ever read with its exciting storyline, memorable characters and--of course--McEwan's brilliant prose. I was very excited to find out there was a movie based on the novel, even though I stayed cautious, not wanting to be too disappointed.Fortunately, Enduring Love is a fine adaptation of its source material. Though it doesn't go as deep as the novel does, it certainly delivers as a smart, different type of thriller.Daniel Craig is one of the highlights of this film, playing the lead character, Joe, with intensity and believability. Seeing him bounce off Rhys Ifans in their awkward confrontations is equally entertaining as the latter portrays the antagonist, Jed Parry, with skillful nuance. Samantha Morton and Bill Nighy on top of all that ? Heck yes !Though many details have been altered, one can see that the filmmakers have a good feel for the novel because its atmosphere is brilliantly transferred to the screen. The first frantic scenes, the paranoia throughout, the looks the characters exchange, it feels right. The only true criticism I would have would be with the pacing. It suited me but someone who hasn't read the book and really got to know the characters might not really care about seeing some things happen and at such a contemplative pace.Anyway... A good film which I enjoyed, but if you want the full "Enduring Love" experience, get the book (preferably during your vacation ! ) and savor it!
