Wow! What a bizarre film! Unfortunately the few funny moments there were were quite overshadowed by it's completely weird and random vibe throughout.
While it doesn't offer any answers, it both thrills and makes you think.
The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful
It’s fine. It's literally the definition of a fine movie. You’ve seen it before, you know every beat and outcome before the characters even do. Only question is how much escapism you’re looking for.
If you don't speak or understand French, don't watch this movie. The translation in the subtitles is atrocious. Seems like the translator couldn't speak a lick of French or knew very little English.Movie starts out OK but bogs down trying to justify too much Jean Reno's role as Charlie, a nice man with high morales that just happens to have been (focus on the pas tense) a vicious mob boss. Good story, and Jean Reno keeps it moving in the last 30 minutes. I kinda hoped that the lady detective would play a more active role and at least killed somebody, but at least she didn't meddle too much in Charlie's payback.

Charley Mattei, a retired gangster from Marseilles, lives in a serene setting outside the city. Unfortunately for him, he must go, from time to time, to the old turf, now ruled by Tony Zacchia, a criminal that has sworn to eliminate Charley. Taking his young son, Anatole, for a ride into Marseilles, he lets the boy get out of the car to watch some street performers while he goes to park. In the underground garage, Charley is surprised by a gang that has come to take him out. He receives twenty two bullets in his body, but he is able to survive. The story goes back to three friends that swore to be friends forever. Charley and Tony Zacchia went to the wrong side of the law pursuing a career in violent crimes. Martin, the remaining friend, has gone to be a lawyer. Now bitter enemies, Charley and Tony are at opposite ends. After Charley is released from the hospital, he embarks in a dangerous course of revenge, taking care of the people that tried to kill him.Richard Berry, the French actor, has directed a few films. In this feature he also collaborated in the screenplay, which is based on a novel by Franz-Olivier Giesbert, we have not read. The premise of the film is something that is beyond imaginable. Imagine receiving, at close range, twenty two bullets in your body, and surviving the experience. Well, of course, only in movies and fiction, something like this could happen. In spite of the preposterous scenario, the film is not without its merits. The French title implies immortality, something that Charley possesses. Fans of the genre can rejoice at the way Mr. Berry staged the action. The scenic city of Marseilles is shown in all its beauty. The bigger than life Charley Mattei is played by Jean Reno, who has enjoyed a long career in the French cinema portraying guys like this man. Kad Merad is seen as Tony Zacchia, the friend turned bitter foe. Jean-Pierre Darroussin appears as Martin, a childhood friend who might not be really who he is supposed to be. Marina Fois plays Marie Goldman, a police detective mourning the loss of her husband to the mafia wars.
Jean Renos character would probably not even smile at 50 Cents near-death experience. That wouldn't even be considered a scratch in his book. But apart from this (useless?) trivia, there is so much that you can find in this movie. Jean Renos characterization for once. The story and the other characters too.Of course you could say that this is romanticising an evil person a bit. But then again, this is a movie. You cannot try and apply rules of real life to it. Other movies with criminals involved might have been worse in that regard. And after all, there are experiences in life, that are truly life-changing. And if what Renos character has gone through does not count, what else does? It's not all drama though, there is a good portion of action to be found here. And very well shot (no pun) and acted out. The end could not have been any other. At least not for me. Highly recommended
