Good films always raise compelling questions, whether the format is fiction or documentary fact.
This is one of the few movies I've ever seen where the whole audience broke into spontaneous, loud applause a third of the way in.
The film may be flawed, but its message is not.
The saddest part of Escape From Sobibor is the uniqueness of the story. Sadly enough there were no mass revolts in the concentration camps, people just accepted the cursed fate that brought them to places like Sobibor.Probably a combination of charismatic leadership and just one too many straws that broke backs led to what happened. In Sobibor in East Poland the main leader is played in this film by Alan Arkin in maybe one of the best roles of his career. Who also turned out to be a valuable asset was Rutger Hauer and a group of Russian prisoners housed there who with a bit of military discipline were invaluable as this story is told. The two saddest scenes are what happened to Joanna Pacula's baby whom she was trying to hide. And young Jason Norman when he sees the gas chambers in operation and knows where his family wound up.Escape From Sobibor is definitely not for the squeamish. But films like this should be made and remade and never forgotten.
I think it is an alright movie with an excellent idea of tells the story of one of the not so well know Nazi death caps. At least I have not come across the name Sobibor before this move came to my attention. What I love most about it is its betrayal of true facts and people and it's full of hope ending. I always value war movies based on true stories rather then a made up representation. I just watched the movie in 2015 and after seeing several other movies about the war before I did not find it as moving as other reviewers say. I guess because I am much older then when they watched it and many years have passed since its release. There are indeed few horrid murder scenes that make you shiver. However, I didn't particularly like how they showed prisoners having fun, dancing, playing games, eating and making out as big part of their daily activities. I am finding it hard to believe that camp experience was as shown in this movie. Many more would have survived if they were treated any close to that. Perhaps it was once shocking and moving movie but compared to what has been made in the years after this could hardly be called a truly touching one.It hardly shows the hardship and pain these people went through, it rather makes you think that things might have not been as bad as they actually were. Perhaps it is because they wanted to show Jews human side, their relations and strive for life instead of always having crowds of people without character being brutally terrorised. Whatever the idea was behind it, it is still a movie to value that tells a very important story of the Sobibor extermination camp.
Without doubt the most emotionally moving film I have ever seen. The atmosphere created cuts through the fact that it is a movie and puts any normal person actually there.Absolutely the most accurate portrayal of the lowest point of human behaviour ever.It still beggars belief that a so-called civilised nation could embark on the systematic annihilation of people purely based on their religion.God forbid this should ever happen againI cried several times and I am not an emotional man.
This is a decent prison escape movie but to even suggest that it is a better holocaust movie than Schindlers List is laughable.Anyone who actually thinks this is an accurate reconstruction of what death camp life was like are seriously lacking in knowledge to the living conditions that these people actually endured. Everyone looks healthy and well fed and the film makes it look like if you stayed out of trouble life was OK. The barracks that the prisoners stay in actually look quite nice and enjoyable in this film.Overall, its a good escape film similar to Alcatraz but its nothing more than that
