A movie that not only functions as a solid scarefest but a razor-sharp satire.
The acting in this movie is really good.
All of these films share one commonality, that being a kind of emotional center that humanizes a cast of monsters.
Blistering performances.
A story of revenge. At the first sigh. In fact, a story of vulnerabilities. Simple. Convincing. Well made. Having the best cast and the best script. So, thriller. An admirable one. For the old fahion flavor. And for happy Demi Moore -Michael Caine meet.
"Flawless" isn't your typical heist movie. There's much more to it than pure entertaiment. This is mainly due to leading characters' psychological background which is very well captured by Demi Moore and Michael Caine.Moore's Laura, a woman who has already achieved a lot in a male-dominant 1960s society, is well aware that even though she works more than her male colleagues, she will always be at a disadvantage. Caine's Hobbs, an elderly jaintor, one of those people whose presence always meets with indifference, has that kind of common man's sensitivity that makes him a far more better human being than other people. He sees the world around him in a much wider perspective. In fact, his motto is that 'it's a remarkable world out there...'... and many people don't realise that. A very subdued performance by Caine makes Hobbs a truly moving character.Michael Radford, a very talented director, somehow overlooked in the last decade, is definitely an actor's director. "Flawless" also proves his great sense of restraint. The usually presented as a very glamorous decade, the 1960s in "Flawless" are very stylish but not overly "shiny". Verdict: if you want something more than just a 'Catch me if you can' story, you'll love it.
This is a quiet, intelligent little movie that showcases beautiful performances from Michael Caine and Demi Moore. The insights into the characters and how their histories and personalities push the events forward are mesmerizing. Finally, the payoff for the audience that have a vested rooting interest is quite generous indeed.I have noticed that this movie rates considerably lower on the Rotten Tomatoes website than at IMDb. I postulate that the sophisticated dialogue and plot driven movie that Flawless is, simply doesn't have enough explosions or action for the younger crowd at Rotten Tomatoes to appreciate. Suffice it to say, if you have some life experience, notice subtlety around you, and still want the world to be a fair place in spite of knowing better, you will come away with a deep admiration and affection for this movie and it's characters.
The movie opens with a scene of raw diamonds being dug out of mud, selected, cut, polished, then mounted for the finger of a lucky lady. That is the subject of the movie, the world-wide diamond industry, and one company, London Diamonds that controls the diamond supply for most of the world. After this introduction we see Demi Moore as Laura in present time, made up to look like a 90-something lady. She is meeting with a 20-something feature writer who wants to know how she broke into management, a pioneer of sorts for women in that industry. She presents a very large, "flawless" diamond, that she says the "stole from the company" and "this is the first time in 40 years I have been in this city as a free woman." But most of the story takes place in the early 1960s, as Laura has been with the company for 15 years, an American educated in England and with a brilliant mind. But the good-old-boy network kept passing her by for promotions. So the long time janitor, Michael Caine as Hobbs, comes to recognize her dissatisfaction and tries to enlist her help, to pull off a heist from the vault. She is reluctant but soon gives in.The opening scene tells us a heist did occur, it leads us to believe Laura spent time in prison, but not all is as it seems. The story unfolds deliberately, and is very interesting. Well worth a watch.SPOILERS: Laura's job is to steal the safe code, which she does at an evening cocktail party at the CEO's mansion. But instead of stealing just a few million worth of diamonds, Hobbs manages to steal all of them, very large quantities of raw and rare cut specimens. Laura is puzzled, but eventually figures out he put them down a drain, and she found them in the sewer below the street. However too late to prevent a ransom being paid to his numbered Swiss account by the company that insured London Diamonds. His motive was to ruin the head of the insurance company who, years earlier had been responsible for denying private insurance coverage for his sick wife who died of cancer that could have been treated. He also sent 100 Million pounds to Laura's account, and it took her 40 years to give it away, to various charitable causes. But she kept the perfect diamond she found that night in the sewer along with the other diamonds. She just didn't tell about this one. Hobbs disappeared all those years ago and was never heard from again.
