It is a performances centric movie
The tone of this movie is interesting -- the stakes are both dramatic and high, but it's balanced with a lot of fun, tongue and cheek dialogue.
Summer Wars features LM, the most boring villain in anime thus far. Granted, its backstory is amazing, but, without spoiling anything, it is rendered dull by the fact that it does not have any true motivation behind its atrocities. If you have watched the film, you may understand why it doesn't have any motivation, but what good is a bad guy who's bad for the sake of being bad? And the moment the movie goes into detail as to how its characters fight LM, the movie loses its damn way. Here, the action of countering LM is represented visually, but that also means that the action on screen is all a loose interpretation of what the computer aficionados at home are actually doing. They dedicate so much time and effort into forcing viewers to watch Oz-related action sequences that it drags me away from what made me love the film initially - the awesome characters. I don't know if just 'general hacking' and 'better computers' are really what are needed to best an AI opponent in a fighting game, but yeah...as I said,
Every year we received a movie trailer for some new film that comes with the subtitle "the family movie of the year". I've never understood the term, until when I watched Summer Wars, and after that I understand, because this is the one and only "family movie".The story of the film starts pretty standard: one guy that has to pretend to be boyfriend of a girl to keep grandma happy on her birthday... We meet the family, as we meet any other film family: full of crazy and charismatic members... and then the movie breaks down: a computer virus threatens to bring down the net and also start and finish war, if possible... and everything for some mistakes happened on the family... we witness the struggle for survival, not of humanity, but a family, a family that needs to keep together and get everything for themselves... The movie goes up and up every second, and has one of the most crazy, "adrenalystic" climaxes in cinema ever... and will leave you with your nails scratching your sofa... it's simply perfect. The mix of traditional animation with cel-shade and cgi is beautiful, the virtual world allow for a lot of creativity, and the real world looks so full of life... this is a movie to enjoy on full HD.In the end, this is a true story of how you always can rely on your family, no matter what bad the situation be... and you will love it...
Another amazing anime movie from Mamoru Hosoda, "Summer Wars". Mamoru Hosoda also had written and directed "Wolf Children" and "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time". I must say that this movie was very different from "Wolf Children" and "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time". It's about a student who's Oz account gets hacked into by an Ai called "Love Machine". He starts to hack many other accounts which in turn causes serous problems for users and companies connected to Oz. Oz is a digital world that millions of users are connected to. Even people who work at train stations controlling the trains are connected to it. So, "Love Machine" can disrupt and control trains. There are many other services it can control, but I just wanted to give you a gist of what it can do. I never found one problem with this film. The pacing was perfect and the story was amazing. The English voice dubbing talents did an exceptional job that you couldn't even tell the original movie was in Japanese. It is a very nerdy movie, so if you are not into that sort of thing avoid it. I highly recommend this to any gamer or tech nerd who is a fan of anime or even if they are not a fan.
This is not a traditional Japanese anime. In the beginning, you hear both Japanese and English audio at the same time and may think there's something wrong with the movie. This goes away after a few minutes.Half the story happens inside a computer network called Oz, where computer programs come to live and take on the appearance of a human/monster. For me, this is a big turn-off because I know computers don't work this way. Either the script is written by people who don't know much about computers, or the anime is meant to be viewed by people who don't know much about computers. This is the main reason for the low rating. If you swallow this visualization of a computer, then you may like this anime more. Why is it in animes, the main boy character always shows a lack of self confidence in front of a girl, but gets the girl nevertheless?
