Slow pace in the most part of the movie.
Good concept, poorly executed.
Entertaining from beginning to end, it maintains the spirit of the franchise while establishing it's own seal with a fun cast
The acting in this movie is really good.
I've long been a fan of the various legends surrounding Arthur and Merlin. This movie took quite a different turn on them but did it in a very good way. I've seen many ratings here (I read them all before watching the movie). There are those who rate it highly stating it's an amazing film despite this or that and those who rate it lowly stating the acting is horrible. Neither are completely wrong. The acting isn't the best I've ever seen but it's not awful either. Acting was believable enough to allow you to get immersed in the story and that's all I ever really ask for. The plot was well done though a bit rushed in some places and the overall feel of the movie was excellent. I also really liked that they didn't rely on special effects to tell the story. There were a few... some fog, some smoke... a little fire... but overall the story was done mostly through good storytelling and decent acting.A solid movie. It's not a blockbuster by any stretch but it was a great way to spend a couple hours on a day off.
Set in the dark ages of an ancient magical Celtic Britain, Arthur and Merlin is an origin story where we see the two characters meet as children before the story goes forward fifteen years when they become adults.Arthfael (Kirk Barker) is a young Celtic warrior from Cornwall who has been banished to his lands and he teams up with the wizard Myrrdin (Stefan Butler) who has been hiding out in the forest utilising his magical powers to defeat a powerful druid who has the attention of the old king and who wishes to destroy the Celtic people. The film has all the elements of a quest and obviously inspired by the Lord of the Rings movies and John Boorman's Excalibur but with an extremely low budget. There are several scenes of an overhead crane camera shot following a group as they run along the hills. However the story is thin and the film is overlong where it starts to drag early on.I was surprised to find that the film was shot in England, I first thought it was one of these films made in eastern Europe and they made good use of the rural/countryside locations. However with the recent popular adaptation of Merlin made by the BBC the Arthurian tales need an extra dimension to attract an audience and unfortunately my young son was never entirely enticed by this film.
After wasting my time watching this, I can say this is the worst movie I have watched ever. There is no Arthur nor Merlin in the whole movie, so the title is a big lie. All elements are bad including the weak story, acting, direction, special effects and picture. The weakness obviously appears in the materials and clothes, scenes, editing and movement from one scene to the other which humiliated the story. I couldn't imagine what happened in the minds of this movie's makers to introduce a bad work about two characters Arthfael (warrior) and Myrridin (wizard) after the famous fantastic series MERLIN and what they gained from using a fake title for their work. It didn't meet the minimum of my expectations. It is a bad memory and please don't bother watching it. If there is a rating with minus, I would give it -10.
How to be fair to this movie? Is it a story or is it a movie? I know, dumb question. But as a film, it seems like a student project. That's okay, cause it focuses on story. The acting is suggestive of a play rather than a movie. I would give it ten stars as a narrative. It's a wonderful story. It works as a celtic myth, if such things appeal to you. Ten stars as a play. It could be done at the high school level, it could be off Broadway. But the critics are correct in that it basically takes no advantage of the film medium. It didn't "need" to be a movie. You could read the plot easily in book form. This is or is not a problem - depending on your personal preferences. My suggestion: If you read a book when it first comes out, you'll like this. If you wait for the movie - you won't.
