Good story, Not enough for a whole film
I like movies that are aware of what they are selling... without [any] greater aspirations than to make people laugh and that's it.
Very good movie overall, highly recommended. Most of the negative reviews don't have any merit and are all pollitically based. Give this movie a chance at least, and it might give you a different perspective.
The Olsen Twins - Mary-Kate and Ashley - take their talents into the big screen as they portray High School twin students Roxy and Jane, who take a trip together away from Long Island. Eugene Levy co- stars. One day,we get to see Roxy and Jane decide play with their parents and spend a day on their own at New York particularly in the island of Manhattan. Both have their own motivations to do so as punk Roxy intends to meet his favorite rock star while straight-A student Jane intends to deliver a speech at a scholarship committee. But things get awry as Jane's planner got stolen and both find themselves get involved in a political scandal involving a senator.Meanwhile, their high school's truant officer tries to pursue them.Well, obviously the film isn't great. But by this time, the fans of the Olsen twins are already used to it.It's either you like them or dislike them.As for the plot,it is definitely far from original and refreshing as we get to see another version of the classic Ferris Bueller's Day Off.As always,it is contrived, predictable and clichéd - three qualities that of any Olsen Twins' film.
This is a silly movie that's also funny. With all the crap out there, why did it set a record for lowest opening day box office for a movie in 3,000 theaters? Perhaps it was simply not appropriately advertised. I see other reviewers using words like 'for teen girls' and for 'pre-teens.' I don't believe that those demographics were the actual target for this movie. A silly comedy with attractive teen girls starring in it also appeals to boys (although they might not be completely honest about it) and 17 is middle-aged teen, not pre-teen. Also, while there is no bad language in the movie that I noticed, there were definitely situations of a suggestive nature that I would not recommend for "pre-teens." I can't believe their other movies had this level of 'sophistication.' If you make a movie for older teens and young adults and movie-goers get the idea it's made for pre-teens, perhaps that is part of the disconnect that explains the box office failure. My wife and I have no children, but really laughed out loud at parts of the movie, especially "the speech." I'm not saying who said what so this is not a spoiler. We have not seen other Olsen Twins movies, other than about 2 minutes in a Costco that had a special on their videos. Personally, I thought the girls were fine and the other stars solid. In fact, for my money, the worst actor in the movie by far was Jack Osbourne; not bad, just the least polished of the bunch. And yes, I have seen him in Ozzie Osbourne's family's reality show. The bloopers, billed as "Hilarous Bloopers" were in fact pretty funny, especially watching the twins' reaction to each other's issues. Certainly, it might have helped to show those in the theater. As it happened, we rented the movie while on vacation. If you're looking for a change of pace from SciFi and Bourne-esqe thriller movies, you could do a lot worse.
This is probably the best comedy which I've seen for about two months now. I laughed so much. It is an excellent comedy and I don't get it why all the people hate this movie. Because of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen? No they are such nice, funny, beautiful girls/young women. They are also great actresses! So why you hated that movie? The story was funny. At first I didn't know if I should watch this movie because everybody hated it but then I'd watched it and I was surprised! It is great. The story: It's Jane's most important day in her academical life! If she got the scholarship she could go to Oxfort. Far far away from her annoying sister Roxy. Jane had to hold a speech in New York City. Roxy had to go to New York City too. So they went their together. But it gets very chaotic. At first they are thrown out of the train and then they are threatened by some "gangster".The story is so funny. I could not stop laughing. Watch it and you'll see that it is good!Ashley and Mary-Kate are great actresses. 8 of 10 stars for that funny kind movie.
The film is not good... that's okay, because I didn't expect it to be. I knew this is another Olsen twins comedy film targeted to early teens with lots of advertisements of American teen lifestyle. The story, the characters, the dialogues -- everything was hollow and baseless. The film also preached a little family values in the end. But none of these were actually unexpected.I watched this film on TV with my cousin and sister and their mindset got enough satisfaction. It is pointless to judge the film from my point of view as I'm not it's target viewer. But if I consider a normal fun-loving 15-year-old I see enough elements in this film to please him e.g. the Simple Plan concert sequence. It's definitely not the worst teen film. I've seen worse... many times.
