Yawn. Poorly Filmed Snooze Fest.
As Good As It Gets
It is neither dumb nor smart enough to be fun, and spends way too much time with its boring human characters.
This movie tries so hard to be funny, yet it falls flat every time. Just another example of recycled ideas repackaged with women in an attempt to appeal to a certain audience.
This martial arts film follows two half-brothers, Dragon and Tiger Wong; sons of one of the Dragon Tiger Gate martial arts schools. When they were young Dragon's mother left the school and was later killed in a fire, after which he is taken under the wing of local crime boss Ma Kun and grows up to become his bodyguard. Years later Kun's top people are in a restaurant celebrating being awarded the 'Luocha Plaque' which gives them a local monopoly under the powerful Luocha Cult. By coincidence Tiger and his friends are there too and he gets involved when another gang turns up and starts causing trouble; in the ensuing fight one of Tiger's friends takes the plaque. Dragon goes to retrieve the plaque but Scaly, one of his rivals in the gang, has got there first and drugged Tiger's friends. A fight ensues between Dragon and Scaly. With the help of Turbo Shek, Dragon gets the plaque. Dragon returns the plaque to Kun and the latter states his intention to return it to Shibumi, the leader of the Luocha, and retire something that is taken as an insult. Kun is murdered by Shibumi's men; Dragon gets to the scene too late to save his master but defeats the attackers.Inevitably one thing leads to another and ultimately Dragon is reunited with Tiger and along their new friend Turbo they confront the evil Shibumi. This martial arts film has a decent enough plot but ultimately it isn't about the plot it is about the martial arts action; in this department it delivers the goods. There is lots of fighting; some hand-to-hand and some involving typical martial arts weapons; most notably the nunchaku wielded by Turbo. These fights are delightfully over the top, with characters thrown so hard they shatter walls and a fair amount of CGI. Normally I'd prefer traditional wire-work to obvious CGI but here it fits the films comic book origins. Obviously this is mostly about the fighting but there are also some good humorous moments and decent character development. The cast does a fine job making us believe in their characters even during the more fantastic moments. Overall I'd recommend this to anybody wanting undemanding martial arts action. These comments are based on watching the film in Cantonese with English subtitles.
I think this movie is receiving unnecessary criticism due to people watching a poorly dubbed version of it - Don't be lazy - watch the original language with the English subtitles - You cannot get a full grasp of they story line or the actors abilities if you are not listening to their voices/emotions. I think this is a brilliant comic book movie - it is not meant to be realistic, but over-the-top fantasy - and that's why I love it. The fight scenes are intense and visually stunning, the colouring and design of the film is beautiful, and I think it is one of Donnie Yen's best performances in modern cinema. I had never heard of the film but it happened to be on rental offer so thought I would give it a go and have now watched it many times. I would recommend this film to anyone who is a fan of fantasy/martial art films (But do not watch the dubbed version!)
If there was a kung-fu action movie that brought best elements from everywhere including actors of old and new, settings of old and new, cinematography of old and new this one is it !The way the actions are framed, and the way the actors play their role is superb in this movie. This movie also sees the younger Gen Y-Not actors (those who were born after 1980) coming of age, and their martial arts skills are fresh and different from the ones performed by the old guards of kung-fu cinema.Actually I've never seen a movie that has scenes like this one. It's little bit surreal and has a wide open feel to it which made me like this movie even more. I hope HK cinema will continue with this type of experimentation in its visual dynamics.Future is bright for HK cinema if they can continue to come up with movies like this one.
I came across this Movie by accident in a Blockbuster sale of used movies.Since i am a Fan of Martial Arts i picked this up not really being sure what to expect.I did not about the Comic Book or nothing,i decided to pick this one up.I had so many movies to catch up with that i had this Movie laying at home for a couple of week's,and damn what i had missed. This is really an awesome Martial Art Movie. The Fight Scenes are very over the top sometimes. But thats the good thing about it,,who doesn't love the Matrix Reloded fight or the one from Kill Bill?? Of course these fight are completely different, one uses Cgi and the other one more a Wirework Style. But in this Movie i don't know how they pulled the fights of,well first of all the Actors are Top Martial Artist's so much is done by themselves. But there must be some whirework and CGI in there fore Shure. I usually watch more Good Plot Movies and Many Art Films but i am open for anything that will get me a good time. Well this one has a little plot, but its not very deep. But in this kind of movies who needs a good plot.Five minutes into the movie people are flying trough walls and so it goes on.There are only a couple of slow moments that are: THE PLOT.So this is really all about punching, kicking, awesome stunts and Martial Art moves that will make you stop motion watch it cause it was so fast. The weapon's used in the Movie are also very cool. You can really feel a Comic Like feel when you are watching.Typical long hair fighters a la King of Fighters. If you enjoy movies like Kung Fu Hustle,Kill Bill or the Matrix you'll like this one. They are all over the top.Thing with this movie is that the fight scenes look quiet realistic cause of the skill of the Actors who are top snotch!!if you like fast action and Kung Fu don't miss this Movie
