Too much of everything
Not sure how, but this is easily one of the best movies all summer. Multiple levels of funny, never takes itself seriously, super colorful, and creative.
It’s sentimental, ridiculously long and only occasionally funny
Exactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.
It's not about Wall Street or the financial related related film. The title is where this story sets in, a small town in the United States. This is a thriller about a young man Dwayne, who captured the murder of a mailman while making a video with his girlfriend. Following the event a series of murders takes place. When he comes to know the killer is after him, it's time to reveal us why it's all happening. Meanwhile the sheriff intensifies his investigation considering for the first time such thing happening on his watch in the town.Really a good theme, but some silly plots or the reason behind events makes us to feel this is a stupid film. I mean people can do anything for the silly reasons, but the film did not convince on that. Though the locations were good and so the actors. Hemsworth, Malkovich, Dern, Palmer, particularly Stuhlbarg was very good. The narration had no point of view, it was told from every character. It was directed by some television filmmaker, should have been better, but not bad for a view. This is a hit and miss thriller, I hope you watch it for a simple entertainment than anticipating too much out of it.6/10
Review: I quite enjoyed this movie, because there is so many twists and turns from the get go, and the cast was quite impressive. Its based around a loving couple, Dwayne McLaren (Liam Hemsworth) and Cassandra Steely (Teresa Palmer), who plan to leave there small town but they don't have the money to pursue there dreams. Whilst spending time together in a field, Dwayne witnesses a murder, which he records on his camera, and after showing the footage to Cassandra's father, Big Stan Steeley (Billy Bob Thornton), they decide to show the tape to the towns sheriff, Sheriff Vogel (John Malkovich). Once the town is aware that it was the postman, George Wits (Bruce Dern) who was murdered, mentally challenged Derby Milton (Michael Stuhlbarg) goes on the hunt for the killer, because he desperately wants the parcel that was supposed to be delivered that day. From there the movie goes down many unpredictable avenues, which were intense and humorous in places. You really don't know what direction the plot is going to take, and the various characters were played extremely well. The script was cleverly written and the cinematography made the film seem real, mainly because it really did seem like the small town of Cut Bank, was in the middle of nowhere. Its not very often that I watch an unpredictable film which has a tint of wit, even though the events were quite serious, so it's definitely gets the thumbs up from me. Enjoyable!Round-Up: The director was lucky to make this movie with such a low budget, because the cast was great and it certainly looked authentic. The only problem is that, once you know the full storyline, it's not the type of film that you can watch time and time again but I still enjoyed it. The movie was directed by Matt Shakman, 41, whose previous work has mostly been for TV. Although this was his first movie, the script was good enough to bring Bruce Dern, Billy Bob Thornton, John Malkovich and Michael Stuhlbarg on board, and with Teresa Palmer and Liam Hemsworth becoming quite popular in the move world lately, he really did have a great cast to work with. The character which I found the most interesting, had to be Derby Milton, who ended up being the most deadliest character, even though the whole town thought he was dumb. The only problem is that I doubt that this film will get a big audience, mainly because it's a independent movie which didn't have a large budget but I hope that Matt gets high recognition for putting together something original and quite funny in places.Budget: $5million Worldwide Gross: N/AI recommend this movie to people who are into their thrillers, starring Liam Hemsworth, Teresa Palmer, Billy Bob Thornton, Bruce Dern, John Malkovich, Michael Stuhlbarg, Oliver Platt and Chilton Crane. 7/10
If You are Experiencing a Severe Coen Brothers Jones or Can't Wait for the New Season of Fargo on TV, it is Possible that this may be an Enjoyable Light Snack. Hardly Fulfilling but something to Munch On.The Slight of Hand Casting of Billy Bob Thornton, John Malkovich, Oliver Platt, and Bruce Dern is a Come On that is none too sincere. Sure, all are here to Quirk Things up and They Do but Not Enough to make this Nothing more than a Recycled, Dark Humored Been There Done That. The Thing is Without Style or much Substance and it Moves from one Intentionally Offbeat Reveal to Another and it Plods Along its Unconventionality with as much Flare as a Fireman's Parade on a Summer Afternoon.Stone Face and Emotionless Liam Hemsworth is the Focal Point and He seems to Barely have a Heartbeat Relying on the Gravitas of the Stellar Character Actors Orbiting this Off Center World. Michael Stuhlbarg Stands Out as the Quirkiest of the Quirks, a Mentally Challenged Townie that Everyone Knows and Avoids at all cost for Good Reason. Now, They really Do Have a Good Reason to Stay Out of the Man's Way because He won't be Denied His Priority Mail.
With rare exceptions small towns in American cinema are between two extremes. Either they are the ideal place, a shelter against the corruption of the big city or they're these stifling places of conformity where people want to bust loose as soon as possible. In It's A Wonderful Life George Bailey finds it first one way then the other. But in Cut Bank both the title of the film and the town where all the characters live it's most definitely the latter at least that's what Liam Hemsworth finds. But he's got obligations and a girl he loves in Teresa Palmer daughter of Billy Bob Thornton the richest guy in town. Hemsworth one fine day gets lucky, as he's videoing Palmer for a local beauty pageant in a field he happens to tape David Burke a very silent and stoic Blackfoot Indian shoot mailman Bruce Dern and then take off with the mail truck.Too good to be true. Clues to solving a federal crime involving the mails is payable by Uncle Sam's post office with a six figure reward. And postal official Oliver Platt is here to pay off. But when things are too good to be true they generally are. Then some bodies start piling up and a local eccentric played by Michael Stuhlbarg starts on a hunt for a missing parcel that was supposed to be delivered in the mail by Dern. Just like Fargo, another small town setting with a crime spree that originates with a plan dreamed up by an amateur and carried out by idiots. Cut Bank, Montana is certainly not Bedford Falls. It's more like the film Fargo. In fact there's one very definite parallel, the relationship between Hemsworth and Thornton is almost a duplicate of the one that amateur master criminal William H. Macy has with his father-in-law Harve Presnell. Presnell and Thornton treat the son-in- law and prospective son-in-law like manure which is half the problem.Sheriff John Malkovich whose sleepy little Montana town has never recorded a murder is soon awash in bodies. But when the truth comes out there's a surprise ending I guarantee you won't see coming especially if you think this is a Fargo clone. The cast ensemble delivers good performances but if I had to pick one out it would be Stuhlbarg. His town eccentric hermit is underplayed and frightening at the same time, a difficult thing to pull off.Cut Bank, Montana a town with an unexpected crime wave.
