Best movie of this year hands down!
Fantastic!
a film so unique, intoxicating and bizarre that it not only demands another viewing, but is also forgivable as a satirical comedy where the jokes eventually take the back seat.
The film may be flawed, but its message is not.
How odd that this film got mediocre critical reviews and has such a low rating on IMDb.It has some flaws, most notably an overly-talky script and a generally over-lit look to all of the night scenes, and early scenes don't make a lot of sense (seriously, why would he tell his brother NOTHING?).Flaws aside, though, it has a bunch of cool original ideas, some startlingly creepy scenes, and quite a few visuals unlike anything we've seen before. It also has the benefit of an excellent cast, most notably Fassbender in a far more lowbrow role than I would ever have expected him to agree to. (Come on, who would have thought he'd say yes to being a blood-drinking Nazi zombie?) It's hardly a timeless masterpiece, but it's entertaining and really quite nasty in parts, and is packed with startlingly original visuals. I really enjoyed it.
I've almost always loved Joel Schumacher as a director, which is why it was so disappointing watching this film and finding out it was his! Just watch it if you are interested in 90 minutes of senselessness, gore and poorly mixed horror with Nazi's history. What baffles me the most is the high profile cast, something really unusual in films like this. Shortly, it is the story of two brothers: one convinces the other to follow him in a revenge mission against a family who owns a farm, just to realize they got involved in something bigger than them, something related to supernatural forces that go back to 1936, when some Nazis were sent to America on a project to gain immortality.Sometimes I really don't get the point of a film: this is one of those times!
This is a horror movie about a Nazi necromancer, that means he can raise dead things to do his bidding. The actor interpreting the Nazi is Michael Fassbender. The director is Joel Schumacher. Now, with a premise like that, I expected a great movie, especially since I've read a review describing it in very positive words. Instead, I get a slight twist of a typical zombie/monster movie. I was disappointed. What was amazing was how the movie started. Fassbender coming from Germany to the US, doing his nice guy voice (but with a German accent) explaining to a little girl how he can raise the dead, now that he had found a runic stone. Then a lot of detailed action and scenes explaining the story of the paramedic brother of a soldier lost in Iraq. Then suddenly the brother returns, all rags and long hair, asking for help to get guns and shoot people. Then the film turns into the typical "group trapped with a monster and they have to kill him before it kills them" thing. The dichotomy between to two parts of the movie was shocking, like someone did two different films and then spliced them together, and therefore I can't really recommend the movie, except as a well done monster flick. Go in with low expectations and you might enjoy it fully.
This is one of the movies that make you say "And so?". The film is not as bad as the critics state, but it is not even a hidden gem. It is a mediocre movie by a mediocre director. It starts off very well, but after 30 minutes everything starts to degenerate and the plot makes no sense at all. To make the situation even worse, there is nothing spectacular in the special effect compartments; dialogs are pretty dull too. The storyline is quite appealing, but when it came to shoot the movie probably Joel Schumacher decided to have a drink or two and mess it up completely. Still, you can see some nice ideas that give you hopes... but unfortunately, nothing great will happen on screen. My verdict: a high quality waste of time.
