It's the kind of movie you'll want to see a second time with someone who hasn't seen it yet, to remember what it was like to watch it for the first time.

"Suspect Zero" was based on a famous screenplay by Zak Penn. Penn's story revolved around the idea of a breed of serial killers who, because they are super intelligent, are able to swim under the radar and kill for indefinite periods of time without being caught. Penn mirrored such serial killers to an allegory about 50 foot sharks, mythical creatures which marine biologists have no proof exist, but which hypothetically could. "For a 50-foot shark, the ocean would be a never-ending buffet table," one character says. "He could feed off whales, octopus; he'd never have any need to surface or come to shore. If there was a 50-foot shark, we wouldn't know about it. We'd never see them." Penn's script then watched as an FBI agent teams up with an older, maverick agent who has spent his life tracking "suspect zero", a creature he believes to be a super serial killer.Penn's script was hot property in Hollywood during the late 1990s. It jumped from studio to studio, changed hands a number of times, being re-written and re-written every step of the way. It eventually landed in the lap of director E. Elias Merhinge, who forced more rewrites, threw in a supernatural "remote viewing" subplot, re-imagined numerous characters and sucked Penn's tale of all life. The result became a terrible movie which bore little resemblance to Penn's script and which, like the 50-foot shark, quickly sunk under the radar.Amongst the cast, only actor Aaron Eckhart escapes with dignity. The film co-stars Ben Kingsley in yet another absurd, ridiculous role.5/10 – Worth no viewings.

E. Elias Merhige is the director of this fine movie, filmed in New Mexico and written by Zak Penn. The tale is that of F.B.I. Agent Thomas Mackelway (Aaron Eckhart), a superior investigator who soon tracks down and nabs a brutal serial killer. Unfortunately, his methods are such that the case against the suspect is thrown out, allowing the killer to escape justice. Mackelway is demoted and transferred to Albuquerque, where he is assigned to a a similar case involving yet, another serial killer and meets an old partner Fran Kulok (Carrie-Anne Moss). What Mackelway soon discovers is that all the clues of his prime suspect, Benjamin O'Ryan (Ben Kingsley) for these new grisly killings, may be the key to solving a series of other unsolved murders. The film is a dark drama centering on a collection of twists and turns involving a mysterious government agency called the Orion Project. Ben Kingsley gives an excellent performance and the cast excels in creating a superb movie worthy of being seen by all. Recommend for all Kingsley fans. ****

Demoted for not following police procedure, aspirin-popping FBI agent Aaron Eckhart (as Thomas "Tom" Mackelway) has his hands full with the opening murder committed by creepy Ben Kingsley (as Benjamin O'Ryan). Apparently, Mr. Kingsley likes to kill people and cut off their eyelids. It's all part of an elaborate plot involving serial killers. The story is engrossing, but it leaves you feeling lost. The first killing scene does not allow space in the editing for the perpetrator to be in the victim's car. The tailgater is enough to redirect attention. This opens the door to the supernatural being involved; definitely a consideration, but one addressed later in the film. Everything eventually makes some sense, but it does feels like a cheat, especially when one character takes the other prisoner.***** Suspect Zero (8/27/04) E. Directed by E. Elias Merhige, Suspect Zero follows the disgraced FBI Agent Thomas Mackelway, who was transferred to a desolate area in Albuquerque, New Mexico as punishment for botching a procedure which ultimately led to the release of one of the most notorious criminals on the FBI's list.It features Aaron Eckhart,Ben Kingsley and Carrie-Anne Moss together with Kevin Chamberlin and Harry J. Lennix.Mackelway is given an opportunity to redeem himself, however, when he is called in to investigate the strange murder of a traveling salesman. Mysteriously, the mark of a circle with a line through it is the only clue that the killer left behind. Before long, the prime suspect is identified as former agent Benjamin O'Ryan, who is seemingly obsessed with hunting down serial killers and murdering them rather than turning them in to the proper authorities. Though Mackelway believes he knows the area where O'Ryan is living, he has no idea what he looks like a problem that the rogue agent exploits with great success. Despite his brilliance, Mackelway finds himself caught in a psychological labyrinth of sorts, and is faced with an even greater quandary after learning that O'Ryan is looking for none other than Suspect Zero, a murderer of hundreds and the FBI's most wanted man.The movie is that rare case of a dull idea redeemed by sharp talent. But other than that, there is not much to like in this preposterous thriller.Probably one could say that this is a visually jarring, psychologically daring trip that explores terror in a fresh, if crazy, manner. But nevertheless, only the cast particularly Ben Kingsley saves this film from a complete disaster.
