Bad Acting and worse Bad Screenplay
The performances transcend the film's tropes, grounding it in characters that feel more complete than this subgenre often produces.
It's easily one of the freshest, sharpest and most enjoyable films of this year.
A terrific literary drama and character piece that shows how the process of creating art can be seen differently by those doing it and those looking at it from the outside.
For a modern film, this is full of out of date stereotypes. Why is it perfectly acceptable for a beautiful princess to fall in love with a hideous man, yet there are no stories of handsome men falling for hideous women? All this feeds the stereotypes that females should be pretty, but men can be whatever they want. The only time this is reversed in the film it is used for comedy. If you don't wish for your children to be tainted by this I would avoid.
It wasn't a completely terrible movie, however, the story line was boring and left a lot to be desired. The visuals, however, were great and probably the only redeeming quality of the movie. The choice of songs included in the sound track were decent, but I think Trolls did a far better job of being "self-aware" of its own singing clichés.The Bog King wasn't a likable character, despite the writers trying so hard to shoehorn in sympathy for him. Marianne had good potential, but in the end she pretty much reverted back to what she was in the beginning, thus trashing all her of character development. And Dawn... Dawn was a very sad stereotype. The Fairy King, I think, was my least favorite character just because of what a horrible father he was. If anything, he was even dumber than Dawn.Overall, the plot was very predictable and tried far too hard to incorporate the "don't judge a book by its cover" theme. It tried to make an unconventional love story where the attractive guy is evil and the unattractive guy gets the girl, but it tried too hard and in the end we ended up with one dimensional and unlikable characters. That being said, if you need to distract your kids for an hour or two then go ahead and plop them down in front of the screen. It'll keep them busy for awhile.
From Star Wars' George Lucas comes a whimsical, madcap jukebox musical fantasy that is awesome. After watching the trailer, I was so psyched about seeing this movie. But it was out before I could see it at theaters. Well I had pre-ordered the movie on DVD, and after watching the movie I thought it was awesome! The story is very different from regular fairy tales. It basically about two fairy princess sisters, their notions on love and a love potion made by the Sugar Plum Fairy.I really consider this movie so criminally underrated! It has beautiful animation and it's a great music; I really love their version of "Three Little Birds" and "I Can't Help Myself ". The film even teaches that love isn't skin deep, which I didn't mind at all. I really love Princess Dawn & Sunny the elf, they are a cute match. So overall, I love this movie despite the negativity.
Strange Magic was an okay movie. As an adult who is obsessed with animated films and the fantasy genre, I believed that the film would go onto my list of lesser known favorites. This was not the case. The film was a mixture of Epic, Arthur and the Invisibles, and Labyrinth. The similarities were blindingly obvious, and took some of the most annoying aspects from the three. The SINGING, dear lord, stop the singing. Around fifteen popular songs, from the past sixty years, are retooled and force fed to you till you suffocate. Over thirty minutes! I'm absolutely fine with musicals, but it was done poorly here. The movie would have been exponentially better if the simply cut out the singing. The characters are basic and stereotypical, but each have a little charm to them. The gender representation on both ends is rather insulting, particularly the fact that all the male leads resorted to drugging one of their love interests. Bog and Marianne were adorable, I genuinely liked their characters. It's unfortunate that the film didn't capitalize on them, even more aggravating is that these two sworn-off-love characters fall in love with each other in a matter of hours! The plot is messy, predictable, and bland. The graphics are fantastic, hated the obvious 3d moments and awkward Wild Thing psychedelic nonsense. My mother and sister loved the movie, deeming it 'cute', while I remain disgusted that Lucas proclaimed that Strange Magic was supposed to be the Star Wars for girls.Verdict: The fanfiction is better than the movie.
