best movie i've ever seen.
Good films always raise compelling questions, whether the format is fiction or documentary fact.
Exactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.
Like the great film, it's made with a great deal of visible affection both in front of and behind the camera.
I have become extremely picky about what I watch. Most newer movies dissapoint. This one did not. This one to me ranks way up there with Pretty Woman And many more of my favorites. Love love that we did not get to see Teddy swim to shore. Love that we were left guessing.
I was really surprised. I ran across it on TV and took a chance. I actually really liked it. Sure, it wasn't really a comedy like they advertised, but it was subtly cute. Stephen Merchant really brought an awkward funniness that I loved coming from a nerd perspective. The main love interest has a very unfortunate looking face, definitely not your quintessential leading man. For some reason, I just felt drawn to this movie. Not many movies do that to me. I immediately went on Amazon and bought it. Maybe a niche movie that could garner a cult following? Besides, who doesn't love a soundtrack of almost all 80's music?
I added this movie to my watchlist as an 'I like the actors in it, but I should watch this to fall asleep' kinda thing. Preparing for bed, yawning and tired, the movie begins. Intrigued, great acting, lots of smiling, and some major laughing out loud moments later... An hour and twenty seven minutes flew by so enjoyably that now I can't sleep. I'm annoyed by how good this movie is but I would say it's more for people who enjoy humor, prettily wrapped presents, and that weird feeling you get when you're all 'soft' on someone/something. Not boring. Not dark and twisty. Not zombies eating vampires. Not Trojans coming out of a horse. Don't know why reviewers are so set on looking for those things. *Eyeroll*Yes to romance, comedy, and feeling sad the movie ended because it's a 'feel good' while you're in it.
Eloise attends a wedding reception where her best friend is the bride and she is maid of honour - at least she was, until her boyfriend, the bride's brother and best man, dumped her. So now she is seated at table 19, the table occupied by those who should have just sent a gift while knowing better than to actually attend. Her companions are fellow misfits. The trailer clearly sells this as comedy but, notwithstanding some amusing moments, this really isn't a comedy at all. All the misfits have stories which are quite dark, especially Lisa Kudrow and Craig Robinson, whose marriage is in deep trouble. And Annie Kendrick's Eloise has a story which has a bit more to it than simply being dumped. It's all a bit inconsequential, though. There's enough to hold the attention, and there is some effective acting (Kudrow's mildly bitter wife is good) but, ultimately, the mix of mild amusement and patchy drama doesn't hang together particularly well - Stephen Merchant doesn't seem to have got the memo about it not really being a comedy, and plays it very broadly. This doesn't really succeed as a comedy or as a drama.
