A Masterpiece!
After playing with our expectations, this turns out to be a very different sort of film.
Four fighters, each having different social lives and attitudes, aim to enter and win the Beatdown competition, so they turn to a former champion for guidance. A strong bond is created between three of them and the coach but the fourth decides to betray them and use all kinds of dirty tricks in his attempt to eliminate them one by one. In the end, they must face each other on the cage in order to prove who's best, taking vengeance at the same time on their ex-colleague, now turned into a threat for everybody. As in the first movie, backing down is never an option. Working hard, practicing both physically and mentally and controlling your emotions and feelings is the key to victory. An angry mind is a narrow mind as they often say. It's a more original plot, more composed than the one in the first movie, with several intrigues and a lot of action, ideal for keeping you entertained and curious about the fighters' evolution. This time, we're talking about a good movie and a great one for fighting enthusiasts (not that I'm one of them)!
Just an action movie, without trying to be melodramatic. Yes, it's about 5 guys (including the mentor) with personal problems that seek the answer in training and fighting. There's not much background on the characters - but it's not necessarily bad. Sometimes the director is forcefully trying to make us like some character by making him/her an orphan, or raised by only one parent, or evil step parents, and also having an ill sibling, and no money of course. Did I mention that other kids/people trying to step on them, beat them, or kill them perhaps ?There is no much character development in the movie, maybe except of Justin, but there is character portrayal. It's not hard to understand what kind of person each (and here I think that Michael Jay White did a great job). They all have got problems, but it's not like their world is collapsing on them. At least their not showing it to us - and I think that's good, since the fighter in them becomes more believable that way.I agree that the acting is slightly wooden. And it's irritating at first, though I did get accustomed to it. Surprisingly, it's not full of clichés (though there are some), and the dialogs are not stupid, because the characters don't say obvious things. The fighting is satisfying enough. After all, this is the reason I've watched that movie.I certainly disagree with those saying first Never Back Down was better. This movie has almost no plot, but the first one was just stupid. The director of the original tried to make me like Jack Tyler by the usual trick - making him miserable but struggling. And Cam Giganet's character is barely watchable. He's just not acting like a fighter. The other fighters look more like a clowns. Fight choreography in the original is nowhere near this one. And all unnecessary shots from smart-phone make me ask the question, why watching the first Never Back Down movie ?? For the action - it's not worth it. The drama - not interesting and nothing new.
I was very disappointed with this movie. The first Never Back Down easily became one of my favorite movies. Yes, I buy into cheesy stuff like that and I thought it was an amazing movie because not only did it have fighting but it had romance as well and a story that was very easy to follow. This movie though was utter disappointment and I'm disgusted with the male mind and how far they allowed this movie to go. The sex scenes could have been easily cut out and the topless girls were unnecessary. If they want to keep that, they could have made a theatrical version of the movie for the girls of this world that don't want porn added into an otherwise decent movie.I liked the characters and the cheesiness but there are parts of this movie that I wish I could unsee. I'm going to call terrible editing skills and horrible calls for which scenes are appropriate.
I honestly don't know why this movie only got 5.6 out of 10. This is the first movie I ever did a review on so you can believe its good. Michael Jai White does his thing in the movie. My favorite scene is when he fights like 6 cops handcuffed. All the UFC and MMA fighters did good acting wise except for one. I can't remember his name but he look like a white king-kong. His acting was horrible but everything else in the movie as far as story line, plot and all else was good. if you like this movie, like it at facebook.com/neverbackdown2 ! Michael Jai White always delivers. I am a big fan of his and love all his movies. I really thought this would be a fail looking at the trailer which SUCKED but the movie was awesome!
