at last all those French lessons paid off. I laughed in French. Not quite "haw haw he haw"; but real belly laughs. This film by Francis Verber with Jean Reno playing the solemn solid straight man to Gerard Depardieu's comic idiot is wonderful and worth seeing right now. Reno plays Ruby the cool professional hard-man out for revenge against the gangland Bigman who has murdered his lover. He finds himself lumbered with Depardieu's Quintin, the simpleton from Montargis. There is plenty of slapstick, good lines, cross dressing; pathos and verve.Aver, un petite question? In the middle of the film they both end up in a Psychiatric hospital as a route to escaping from prison. The Psychiatric Hospital is portrayed much as the fears of the 60s showed them; people strapped to beds; forcibly injected to numb them out of their skulls; frog marched around the high walled secure grounds by men in white coats. St Bernards in West London when I was a schoolboy in Southall had that feel to it. So much has been done to try and ease the myths about madness and does this just set things back? I've worked in Psychiatry for a 3rd of a century and things have moved on. Those inkblots are more likely to be just stains now in a dark history. it left me a bit uneasy that madness is still a source for a caricatured laugh. But, then again, there are moves now to start locking wards again, to depersonalise people, to make security of the outside more important than sanctuary for the troubled; and maybe this film actually does a service to warn against that backward move. So, a winner all round. go see.

The humour in this movie is beyond anything English speaking countries have tapped into to date. I haven't laughed so hard for years! I've always enjoyed Depardieu's work, but this was by far his best. I'd seen one of Reno's movies before, too, where he played a similar character. The strong silent type with overpowering emotions is endearing. I loved every minute and would recommend it to anyone who doesn't mind subtitles. I can't wait to buy it! The only incy wincy drawback was the inevitable change of heart from Reno (saw the whole thing coming a mile away) but the last line still had me in stitches. I'll marvel forever at Depardieu's ability to give that awe factor for every minute of a movie.

I had the pleasure of seeing this film on a select showing in Glasgow Film Theatre, mid last year."Tais Toi!" is without doubt, THE funniest film I've ever watched. The writing and timing are just superb. I consider this to be one of Jean Reno's finest parts. Gerard Depardieu is up to his usual fantastic standard. Anyone with doubts as to how good this film is should just sit back, watch, and reserve judgement till the credits have finished rolling. It's proof that if you've got a good actor (actors in this case) or actress on board, you can play any part you want without being concerned that it departs from what roles they've done in the first place. An absolute treat, watch it when you need picking up and want to see the zany side of life.

Well this movie is one of the greatest comedies I've ever seen. If the movie lasts 1h 20 min you'll laugh maybe 1h 20min. Gerard Depardieu and Jean Reno's (perhaps the two greatest French actors) performances are amazing. They play the part of a fool (Gerard Depardieu) and an intelligent murderer (Jean Reno). The story is also good, not too silly and not too serious. The movie isn't very long which is great too (you know comedies mustn't be too long).I strongly recommend this film for people of all ages (I'm 13 years old, i saw it with my mom and she thought the movie was great too). I had seen some French films before and they were good, I'm starting to like French films and this is not the exception.
