Too much of everything
So much average
Although it has its amusing moments, in eneral the plot does not convince.
I enjoyed watching this film and would recommend other to give it a try , (as I am) but this movie, although enjoyable to watch due to the better than average acting fails to add anything new to its storyline that is all too familiar to these types of movies.
I enjoyed reading the books before watching this movie. They were well written. This movie follows the books very closely and is very entertaining. Sure, there is some stupid, but at least its very well done for the most part. I would recommend watching this movie.
OK I thought this film would be a story about someone/people who can bring things out of other dimensions. Therefore all good hearted writers have an unknown gift from GOD to create and bring to life stories, as soon as the ink hits the paper. No one knows that all fictional stories are actually made real by GOD and given their own dimension. Just like Einstein's theory suggests there is the possibility of multiple universes/dimensions etc. Thus a chosen few people (known as "Silver Tongues" in the film) have the power to transport objects/living things from their written dimension to Earth. This is done by just reading out loud the text. However it was a lot more unbelievable than my adaption is. Although the acting is OK not great by any means but acceptable. I found "Andy Serkis" who played the baddie, really good and captivating.Paul Bettany and Brendan Fraser almost live up to their well known great acting abilities. I would give their performances 7/10. Even though they both have the capabilities to produce a level of 11/10.Hellen Mirren, got easy money. Her character was not even needed in the film, for her role and performance was pointless. Her acting in this for me was the worst. It was just too unconvincing and forced, not to mention annoying at times. It did have some mildly interesting effects. I especially enjoyed the shadow at the end. Yet to be fair could have been drawn and done as good using 3d animation workshop software on any fairly powerful home computer.I consider it worth watching, just to see the crazy creatures/objects come to life. When they bring them out of the classic books we all remember. If you like happy endings this film has the perfect example of one. Which I really enjoyed but hey I'm a big softy at heart, he-he.All in all a worthy family film. When you have seen everything else, you might as well give this a go! It's certainly NOT to be avoided. :D
It really isn't fair for me to review this movie without finishing it. I hope to finish it someday and go back and finish this review. But I'm having a hard time wanting to finish it - and it's mostly because of blocking problems. The scenes in the movie might have worked perfectly well in a book. But when transferring action scenes to the screen, they haven't paid attention to the question, How can we block this scene out so that it makes sense? Where should people stand? What should they be doing? So we have action sequences where most of the actors are standing around looking lost. The people being captured have plenty of chances to run away, and instead they run and hug each other, or stand in place, or deliver monologues. The ruffians stand around watching the good guys almost escape. They brandish guns and knives vaguely, without conviction; and the good guys don't seem intimidated by them. It doesn't make sense. Not to mention, why is it the reader is on the run from a violent gang of criminals for years, and he doesn't have any kind of plan for when they show up? Doesn't carry a gun, hasn't warned anybody, doesn't try to escape. It's hard to stomach.
I have not read the books, but I have heard nothing but good things. I did enjoy Inkheart on the whole, but something was missing in translation and I can't put my finger on it.Inkheart does have a number of good things. The visuals, down from the cinematography, settings and costumes, are truly excellent and Javier Navarette's score is enchanting. The film is well-directed as well. And overall, I did enjoy the acting. The best of the lot comes from Paul Bettany who is stunning and steals every scene he's in and Helen Mirren who is deliciously batty. Brendan Fraser is dashing as well, Jim Broadbent is very entertaining and there is a believable child performance from Eliza Bennett. For me, the only two performances that didn't work were Sienna Guillory who was bland and dare I say sometimes irritating both in character and acting and (sadly) Andy Serkis who doesn't get anywhere near enough screen time to shine properly. While the flawed assets have enough magic, heart and charm to them, they are still flawed. The story structure(great idea by the way) and script are both disjointed overall, and some parts felt rushed such as the ending. The characters are likable too, but also under-developed and fall into cliché territory.Overall, enjoyable and charming but there is nothing really spectacular apart from some performances, the music and visuals. 6/10 Bethany Cox
