Fast-talking Latino con artist Pestario "Pest" Vargas is the target of Scottish mobsters to whom he owes a considerable debt. Willing to do anything to raise money and avoid severe injury or death, Vargas agrees to a very unusual job -- he will be transported to a remote island and hunted by Gustav Shank, a racist German executive. If he can survive a full day and night, Vargas gets $50,000 and will be set free. Is he wily enough to elude Shank?

Great Film overall
Instead, you get a movie that's enjoyable enough, but leaves you feeling like it could have been much, much more.
It's a movie as timely as it is provocative and amazingly, for much of its running time, it is weirdly funny.
It's a difficult undertaking for someone of my generation to watch a film like The Pest. Not because it's "too old" or "too boring", but because it has been hailed--almost universally--as the single best motion picture ever made. And while the anticipation of seeing a film with such overwhelming acclaim may be quite exhilarating, actually watching it is ultimately an intimidating and somewhat disappointing experience. But what exactly is so special about it? Is it its great genre mix, never equaled by another film? When we think of 'The Pest' first, we remember it as a romantic film (well, most of us do). But then again, its also a drama involving terror, murder and flight. One can call it a character study, centering on Pest. And there are quite a few moments of comedic delight like the plane scene and when Louis Theroux appeared. What makes this film so powerful is the message that it made at the time of its release. This film came out at a height of paranoia of the nuclear age and the Cold War, right around the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis. This film depicts a horrible, tragic incident in which a breach in the government and a few diplomatic mistakes result in nuclear holocaust. So, why didn't this film inspire panic? Because of the brilliant way in which Miller presents it... as a satire. The scariest thing about this film in retrospect is not how it depicts the impending doom of the Cold War, but how it makes you laugh at it. By presenting it with humor, it conveys just how much of a farce the nuclear arms race was in real life. And I don't think that any other film has captured the absurdity of war nearly as well as this one has. And I am not likely to believe that one ever will. In my opinion, Paul Miller has never made a better film since. And kudos to John for his astounding performance, as well as Brendan Frasier for the most versatile acting I've seen from an actor in one film. Beware of fluoridation!
This is the worst comedy i have ever seen !! I have seen a lot of comedy's and this was the first movie i stopped after 45 minutes because it was so annoying and NOT FUNNY AT ALL. The acting was very bad and Pestario 'pest'vargas (the leading part) Was the most annoying man i have ever seen i wanted to kill myself when i saw this movie. I was watching the movie with 10 family members and everyone hated the movie and they were all very relieved when i asked if anyone else hated it so much, when i asked it i heard 10 people saying YES !!!. So this is a warning do not watch this movie its horrible and a waist of your money.
although i'm sure many people say this movie is dumb or ridiculous, i think it is an awesome movie and despite the 5th grade kind of humor, it's hilarious. i mean if you can't just enjoy it and have to judge it like that then don't watch it. but i've loved this movie for a long time and there are just so many parts that make me laugh really hard. maybe you have to be a true fan to appreciate it, because i've seen it many times since about 1999 and every time i still love it. it may be different if you just randomly see it one day. john leeguizamo may be immature in it, but he is ridiculously funny and random which makes me love it. well anyways, don't diss the pest cause it rocks!!
I find this movie very funny. But I'm also in Highschool. We recently read a story called. "The most dangerous game" I find that this story resembles the story. Where an eccentric millionaire who has his own little private island hunts down humans since animals aren't a challenge anymore. This is a good movie to watch if you want a good laugh. John is a great comedy actor. I would watch this movie once a year, but I wouldn't say it's one of my favorites. If you want to see John in a more serious role. You can try Romeo+Juliet (1996) version. Most of the other actors in this movie I haven't seen in other roles. I wouldn't be able to recommend anything else.
