Best movie of this year hands down!
Truly Dreadful Film
At first rather annoying in its heavy emphasis on reenactments, this movie ultimately proves fascinating, simply because the complicated, highly dramatic tale it tells still almost defies belief.
It really made me laugh, but for some moments I was tearing up because I could relate so much.
Anyone remember the old TV comedy Bewitched? This mess up has the same name and the same basic concept, but it is used as a vehicle for (this will make you laugh. Not) Will Ferrell! Yes, the story is not about a witch in the real world but about Will Ferrell failing to be funny. In fact the entire movie was not remotely amusing. I am not a big Nicole Kidman fan; she appears to have just one facial expression and uses it at every opportunity. This film might explain that expression - sort of confused incomprehension - since a role that maybe her agent (and the rest of us) thought would be the lead was torn away and the emphasis instead given to Ferrell (I can only think that he has some blackmail material on somebody important) to promote what should be a background character to be the lead. Want to know how bad this was - imagine a film being made of Breaking Bad with the lead role being taken by another teacher who never actually appeared in the original series.Dreadful.
What a fun movie - especially if you've seen the original Bewitched. And the target audience is exactly that -- those that have seen the original. Nicole Kidman is cute, coy, and vulnerable in this great comedy that kept a smile on my face all the way through. Will Ferrall is as funny as ever and has some lines that wound up being those lines your family repeats and mimics. Michael Caine is the icing on the cake in his role as the father. Probably the best remake of an older movie/series I've seen in a long time. I am totally perplexed by the downplay this movie is getting - I was totally stunned to see anything under a 6.7 or so. I consider myself a bit picky about my two hours in front of a movie - this didn't disappoint and I've watched in probably three times over the past several years. Love it!
I finally got this movie on DVD because,, well it was for sale. I like Will Ferrel and Nora Ephron, so i figured I'd give it a shot. This had a lot of potential, but wow,, a witch, who is accidentally cast as a witch in a TV show? Yikes! There was a great cast involved and could have been a real hoot but the premise of the whole movie is just off the mark. Why didn't they just do a movie based on the original idea? A witch who marries a mortal and he has to deal with all her wacky relatives. Could have been hilarious. Oh well, it is what it is. I watched it once and it shall now be relegated to the pile. The individual performances were okay though, just the story really really does not work. Thanks for reading!
Bewitched (2005) was kind of a let down in my personal opinion. This movie is just pretty bland most of the time. Nicole Kidman does actually do a good job as the lead, even though she doesn't have very good material to work with. Also, I really enjoyed Shirley Mclaine in the film, she gave a solid performance. Kristen Chenoweth was refreshing to see as well, and was perfectly cast for her role as the best friend. I wasn't a huge fan of Will Ferrell in this movie, I thought he went kind of over the top at times. The main issue I took with the movie was the lackluster script and the boring dialogue between the characters. This movie's comedy was alright, nothing all that great though. The actor's performances was really the silver lining in this movie, the performances could not save the film, but at least it was something fresh out of this mostly boring film. Also Steve carrel was fun in this movie, even though his appearance was short and sweet. So overall a 5/10 for Bewitched (2005).
