As Good As It Gets
This is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a very long time. You have to go and see this on the big screen.
An old-fashioned movie made with new-fashioned finesse.
Shawn Levy performs a good update from Blake Edwards's "The Pink Panther" with gags that recall more situations of the type "Grab it as you can," but without losing that classic touch of the original film, striking to repeat both soundtrack and the magnificent animation developed in the initial titles of credit. While it is true that Steve Martin never reaches the degree of genius of Peter Sellers, it is also true that he plays his role very well, getting the audience laughing in their successive catastrophes, leaving no puppet head wherever it may be. Well backed by Jean Reno as his longtime companion, Beyoncé Knowles as the beauty of the turn and brief but intense interventions by the charismatic Jason Statham as French soccer coach and Clive Owen parodying James Bond, the film is a continuous sequence of comic sequences, humor to some extent intelligent, that will delight everyone. It would have been wonderful, if Cato Fong returned (this time played by Jackie Chan) and teamed up with Ponton, and have the soccer star David Beckham on this movie, but nevermind that! To put a sticking, the script misses somewhat to an actor of the stature of Kevin Kline, but the objective of the film, to make laugh to the most painted, is obtained with more. Highly recommended.
Hollywood takes us for idiots: they kept selling us the same soup: first with Sequels that are the same original movie with a few changes and now with Reboots that are the same original movie with no change! Maybe such a movie is conceivable when the original has a cult status and must be kept alive from generations to generations and above all, if it's to do it better. Here, it's not the case: the movie is barely funny because the script is stupid (football manager?), the cast is ill-set up (Reno drags his feet all along, Beyonce is limited to play her own occupation) and the location is a big lie: The action barely happens in the real Paris and they even go to NYC just for production cost, I suppose! Thus it was a huge disappointment and I'm happy to have watched it for free and disgusted now to even check for a sequel!!!
As a huge fan of Peter Sellers and his comedic genius, I can honestly say that Steve Martin's performance in the new Pink Panther movies is the biggest travesty I've ever witnessed in my entire life. From the constantly smug expression on his face that is painfully forced, to his excruciatingly strained attempt to say "hamburger", which by the way he manages to butcher so badly that at some point he's just saying random gibberish, to his unbelievable idiocy and lack of any sense, and so much more, there isn't a single funny moment in this entire mockery.I can't believe they made a second one. Someone please pay him to never make another one again. Leave Peter Seller's legacy alone and don't tarnish the Pink Panther name any further, please. This was the hardest movie to watch, the sheer idiocy is on its own level, and not in a funny way at all. If I could give it a lower rating than 1, then I would. "Awful" is just the start of how I'd describe this movie.
I am not a fan of the original Pink Panther. I just find that movie devoid of any laughs at all (or at least I did - I was about 13 or 14 when I wrote that review). I think that this remake is a good one because it knows what it is from the start and instead of just rehashing the original with "recreat EVERY last scene, and make some stupid changes to them while we're at it." (eg, The Karate Kid) this one however makes The Pink Panther diamond more central to the plot (not that it really matters). Now I know that many people will be unhappy about my judgements on these movies. But I will say that this version I prefer mainly because it made me laugh, it might be just my humour but I rather enjoyed it.
