The performances transcend the film's tropes, grounding it in characters that feel more complete than this subgenre often produces.
In truth, there is barely enough story here to make a film.
Fanciful, disturbing, and wildly original, it announces the arrival of a fresh, bold voice in American cinema.
The acting in this movie is really good.
More than a salute to all things "Star Wars", "Fanboys" also tips its cap to childhood friendship and hero idolatry as kids. A band of "Star Wars" geeks plan on fulfilling a childhood dream of breaking into George Lucas' Skywalker Ranch. They also want to steal a print to see the then-new "Star Wars: Episode I" before the passing of one of them, who is suffering from terminal cancer, which causes the only "responsible" member of the group to rejoin them. The film shows their journey from Ohio to the Ranch, and what they encounter. Some great cameos occur throughout the pic, and there are tons of movie references to satisfy all of the "Star Wars" fans. There are laughs throughout the film, but one has the feeling the movie could have been even funnier if not done so casually. A good video watch, but should have been better.
What's nice about "Fanboys" is that it takes us back to that pre-"Episode I" period when Star Wars fans weren't divided along trilogy lines (if you've spent much time on the Internet in the last, let's say 14 years, you'll know what I'm talking about). It was an innocent time, believe it or not.The charm of this movie is due to its cast. Our five heroes are a likable group of actors. Jay Baruchel, Dan Fogler and Kristen Bell get the best lines, and seeing Bell take down Fogler in a headlock was pretty funny. I do love her character's spunk. And the filmmakers went to some lengths fill out the rest with famous faces (the names here will surprise you). A lot of the humor here rests on cheap gags and a few tired jokes (most of which is aimed at the die-hards in the audience), but for the most part, "Fanboys" is a fun road trip.6/10
I really liked this movie. I was a bit worried at first, because I know nearly nothing about Star Wars, except for the fact that Luke and Leia are brother and sister, Darth Veder is Luke Skywalker's dad, Leia wears a gold bikini, and C3PO looks like Sheldon Cooper from The Big Bang Theory. But, don't worry. If you've seen every Star Wars movie, none of them, some of them, or if you're like me, watched twenty minutes of Episode IV and have never finished it, you will like this movie. This movie is about a group of Star Wars loving friends in the 1990s. It's almost time for Star Wars Episode I to come out and they couldn't be more excited. Well, they could if their friend hadn't been diagnosed with a deadly illness. I think cancer, but I'm not completely sure. Anyway, his last wish is to see that movie. But he worries that he'll be gone by the time it comes out. So he and his friends travel to the Skywalker Ranch, in hopes of stealing a copy and watching it. In the end, they get caught, but George Lucas lets the dying boy watch the movie. Several months later, his friends go see it, and the last part of the movie is someone saying, something like, "I hope this doesn't suck" or "This is going to be awesome". One of those, sorry, I can't remember. Overall, I give this movie an 8 out of 10.
Fanboys isn't a terrible movie however with a 3 million dollar budget I felt cheated they couldn't at least get George Lucas to make a cameo. Honestly there really isn't a lot of star wars stuff in it either besides a museum of costumes and artifacts from other lucas films. Not even sure is they filmed at the actual ranch? Regardless, this film comes very short on some desperately needed extras. George Lucas actually being in it. I did love the scene where someone gets to kiss carrie fisher. That was an epic moment along with Shatners appearance. I think if it hadn't been for cameos from shatner, fisher, billy dee williams, and ray parks this film would probably have never made any money. It barely made it past the half million mark in earnings so for the people getting offended at bad reviews it's just facts. So I'll give fanboys 5 stars for a good effort but the writing comes up short of anything truly genius considering all the sexual humor that uuuummmm star wars films do not need to be awesome. ~ S A Storyteller
