Better Late Then Never
Pretty good movie overall. First half was nothing special but it got better as it went along.
The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.
Great animation with a story that is totally for kids. A story that is similar to many others. No sure they had the behaviors of the dinos all that right because they acted a lot like elephants, wolves, and so many other mammals we know. Except for the birds.
I was very excited to see Walking with Dinosaurs, especially after seeing the trailer. I was extremely disappointed to discover that instead of watching the amazing animation, you spend the majority of the time trying to ignore the absolutely horrible voice-over. I understand the desire to make the movie more marketable to children, however, I believe that if the movie had been released as it was originally intended, without the ridiculous script, not only children but also teens and adults would have enjoyed the film. Kids are not dumb and very few actually need a narrated storyline to understand what is going on.
This one came from my public library on DVD. My wife and I enjoyed it but it is probably better suited for the younger generation. It takes pains to make the CGI prehistoric life as accurate as current science can tell us, and each time a new species is introduced flashed on the screen are a few details about it, like what its name means and what its diet consists of.The story is set in Alaska and the time covered in the story is the long migration south as fall and winter set in, then the reverse migration as spring returns. There are a number of characters but the core story involves Patchi, a kind critter that develops a hole in his upper head after almost being eaten, his larger and meaner brother Scowler who becomes the alpha of the group, and cute (in a dinosaur way) and sweet Juniper. She is first Patchi's girlfriend but when Scowler wins leadership he also takes Juniper for himself. At times I found it just too juvenile for me, but at other times I found myself really interested. It is not an outstanding movie, nor is it a poor movie. It is great for the right audience.
I am currently sitting with my kids watching this in 3D. The movie looked impressive on the store shelf so I picked it up for the kids to watch. As is often the case I just wish I had read some reviews on IMDb before hand. The graphics and CGI are spectacular but everything else including the storyline is instantly forgettable. Both my daughters are attempting to sit through this but are already twiddling their fingers completely bored. A few evenings ago they watched a 3D version of Planet Dinosaur, thoroughly enjoying it screaming in both fear and delight. I had so hoped that this would have been a better and even more enjoyable movie but unfortunately even with the superb graphics this will never be the case. So avoid at all costs unless you are willing to play it without sound.
