A Masterpiece!
It's entirely possible that sending the audience out feeling lousy was intentional
The film makes a home in your brain and the only cure is to see it again.
A terrific literary drama and character piece that shows how the process of creating art can be seen differently by those doing it and those looking at it from the outside.
Making a Stand against Injustice, Cruelty, and Senseless Death Dealing, is a Common Theme in Literature and Movies. Here, a Senior Citizen is more than Forgiving. His Initial Response is nothing more than Expecting some Remorse, Reflection, and Apology for, Perhaps, a Moment of Youthful Indiscretion, that Resulted in Taking the Life of a Man's Best Friend.Of course, that is not to be, as He Discovers that none of that is Inherent in these Ruffians Considering Their DNA. The Parents Accept even Less Responsibility (therein lies the root of the problem), and Things Spiral into a Universe of Violence and Comes Upmanship. This is a Strong, Emotional, and Engaging Film that is well Acted, Brian Cox Receiving Raves Everywhere, and the Pacing is Steady, leading to the Inevitable, but Twisty Conclusion. Along the way there is a Back Story Monologue Involving a Bizarre Family Tragedy that, if You Think about it, is Totally Unnecessary.A somewhat Searing Story, this Indie Delivers the Goods with an Up and Down, Back and Forth Style that Erupts and Settles, Erupts and Settles that makes for some Disturbing Tension and is more than Worthy of its Troubled Production and its Low-Budget.
Old Ludlow is an ex soldier. He took horrible blows along the way but survives and now live peacefully with his dog, Red. Then in an unfortunate day a teenager shots it in the head for no apparent reason.Ludlow, wants justice. It is apparently a high mountain to climb. But his soldier mentality keep him going. "As long I have something in my hand, I will keep fighting. Because if I stop, the world will rolling over me." And being old, he is a wiser man, despite the incident had cut open his old wound, he stays cool."Red" is not a violent movie, nor it needs some cgi visualization. Everything is measured and well act, you'll think its real. They don't make this kind of movie anymore, not because its hard to made, but because they don't get megabucks out of it.So, if you have the opportunity, don't let this rare gem passed.
Brian Cox is Avery Ludlow, a nice man who enjoys the simple things in life. A country store, lots of friends, a faithful dog, and an old truck for his fishing. One day three teen boys show up at the fishing hole with a bit too much attitude. The ringleader, Noel Fisher as Danny, is carrying his new shotgun. They "ask" Avery how much money he has, and disappointed in his answer shoots and kills his dog, "RED", lying beside him.So the movie is about getting the boys to own up to what they did, realize it was wrong, and apologize.Being a gun man himself Avery does a bit of detective work and finds who Danny is. He shows up at their fancy home and talks to Tom Sizemore as Mr. McCormack, Danny's dad. Predictably Danny denies everything and his dad minimizes the whole thing and sends Avery along. But Avery is persistent if nothing else. At one point he is helped by his friend Kim Dickens as Carrie, a TV reported. She enlisted Avery's help to make a video news spot, at the scene of the dog killing, to try to pressure the DA to take the case.Brian Cox, who also was one of the producers, does a fine job in his role.MAJOR SPOILERS: In his back story Avery had lost two boys, an older one who had some emotional problems, and who was also responsible for his younger brother's death, and Avery's wife's death by burning with kerosene. In this movie, Avery held himself responsible for the deaths of two of the three boys, via his persistence. There was shoot-out one night, where Avery was forced to defend himself after they had tried to kill him by running him off the road. So no one really came out ahead in this story.
I saw this movie with no big expectations. Only after a few minutes of watching I started to realize that this is on just a ordinary movie. This I noticed through the dialogs which is pretty god and most from the excellent acting from main role Brian Cox. The actors in this movie are behaving quite naturally and this having effect to movie that it looks realistic. If you have read a plot and you doesn't see the movie, you easily can think this is a one of cliché revenge movie. If you so, you're wrong. This is emotionally and strong story about one man and his love to justice and his dog. His dog isn't only a pet, it's everything he got. He lost his woman and son which were killed by his older son. In the middle of the movie, Brian (or just Ludlow in this movie) talking about his sad and unlucky past and what he's been through. One thing that has flaws and that get me nervous a little bit is the near the end movie. Almost entire movie, Brian stalking a kid who killed his dog. At the near end, he get in the gun conflict with that kid and his father. In the next scene we realize that Brian is peacefully reading the newspaper. There's no cops, there's no trial, just a big and sudden plot hole. I begin to ask what happen to father? What police have to say at all about? Well, I have to only guess, but not to be sure. Movie for surely wouldn't be that much long and outstretched if they were filmed this explanation. But that's no big failure. It was really enjoyable movie and I'm really satisfied about that. Must say that this work is somehow overlooked. I watched many popular movies last years which they were not good as this one. This movie isn't popular at all in the meaning of cinematography. It's convicted on small publicity and audience with intention. With all this we now realize that this is one of those hidden gem that we must watch. Even if we don't like dramas, I think that many wouldn't be disappointed.
