A Major Disappointment
what a terribly boring film. I'm sorry but this is absolutely not deserving of best picture and will be forgotten quickly. Entertaining and engaging cinema? No. Nothing performances with flat faces and mistaking silence for subtlety.
It’s sentimental, ridiculously long and only occasionally funny
Alexandre Aja directs a slasher flick that is in abundance of blood, gore and violence in this French film called "High Tension".Cecile De France and Maiwenn star in this movie that tells the story of Alex and Marie's trip to rural Southern France to study when a sudden appearance of a man driving a truck started to wreck havoc to the family of Alex and puts Alex into captivity.Marie hangs on for an opportunity to save Alex. But things become awkward in the end as it was presented that Marie and the killer are one and the same.Despite the much debated possibility of Marie and the killer being the same person, the movie as a slasher flick was definitely entertaining.Viewers who love blood, gore and excessive violence will definitely enjoy this film.As far as the issue of having Marie and the killer as one and the same,I felt that it was clearly presented in the first scene but many people missed it particularly those who were furious about it.But for people who caught it,there should be no issue at all.
Marie and Alex drive to spend a couple of days on Alex's parents' farm. Marie has a crush on her best friend Alex. Everybody is sleeping while Marie masturbates. Someone rings the doorbell. Alex's father answers the door and is killed. One by one, her family is slaughtered. Alex is chained up and taken. The phone is cut. Marie goes unnoticed by the killer and sneaks onto the truck. This is bloody and violent. It's brutal once the blood starts splattering. Cécile de France has a great look. It's an ultra-violent French horror and fairly effective as a brutal blood fest. Then there comes the twist. This twist is getting a little tired and overused. It's not that well constructed in this case. The twist becomes something tacked on out of nowhere.
I just finished watching 'High Tension', and I have to say, I liked it so much that I think I'm going to watch it a second time with my father. It's kind of difficult to pinpoint exactly what makes 'High Tension' so great. After all, it's essentially just another 'Home Invasion' film with a plot that's very similar to 'Ils' and 'The Strangers'. However, Alexandre Aja really knows how to build up suspense-after all, they don't call the movie 'High Tension' for no reason. If you're like me, a person who's become desensitized to most gory or 'scary' films, than I would definitely recommend this one, because unlike so many other movies with similar plots, 'High Tension' is so incredibly suspenseful that I literally could not relax while watching it in my bed.The only drawback of the movie in my opinion is the ending-but once I got used to the little plot twist, and accepted it, I actually felt the movie was better for it.Also, and pardon me for going all over the place about this one, but it's just so god damned good. This movie has your heart pounding right up to the very end. I was so impressed with this movie that I even contemplated watching Aja's remake of 'The Hill Have Eyes', which I saw long ago in theaters and don't recall liking it that much (although I will say I thought the second one was real good).Another thing that I liked about this movie (as opposed to 'Inside') was that it doesn't just rely on gore to creep the viewer out. In a way it was similar to 'Martyrs' in that sense. When the movie does get violent, it's quite graphic, but nothing ever seems like 'gore for gores sake'. When I was a teenager I was all about watching the most graphic horror films available (I was definitely into 'Ichi The Killer' and the first two collections of the 'Guinea Pig' series). Nowadays though, I don't really care for violence without substance (don't get me wrong, I still love 'Ichi', but in retrospect I found the Guinea Pig Series rather boring). After watching some of the most extreme 'torture-porn' titles, I kind of got to the point where that kind of thing didn't have that much effect on me-I honestly found 'Inside' so boring that I turned it off about 3/4 of the way through, because the gratuitous violence seemed so unnecessary, and that's what I love about movies like 'High Tension', 'Kill List' and 'Martyrs'-sure, they truly are quite violent, but I never felt like the three listed films tried to just rely on the gore for shock value or scares. If you're looking for a heart-pounding, truly frightening horror movie, then check out 'High Tension', it's one of those rare horror movies that one comes upon every once in a great while that truly achieves what it sets out to do-scare the living crap out of you.
My best friend Amy is a lesbian. She dates guys once in awhile, but she truly loves women. She doesn't wear her hair short, and she likes pretty dresses, high heels, and lip gloss. She wasn't the stereotypical lesbian that "High Tension's" Marie was at all. Now having said all that, I really think Alex should have bought the clue that not only was her closest pal a lesbian, but Marie was rocking a major crush on her. Perhaps she did know, yet chose to tease Marie. Teasing is not nice. Teasing can get you killed The film begins with two girls in the car on a road trip listening to what ends up being an amazing soundtrack. ( and by the way, yes, girls do sing like that in the car when we're alone together) Alex and Marie make their way to mom and dad's for the night when madness ensues. I recall feeling sickeningly claustrophobic during the bathroom scene, and as the apt title suggests, the tension was insurmountable. The effects of the kills were exceptional, but I had to wonder if the cut would be quite so clean regarding an occurrence on the stairs. With the exception of a couple masturbation scenes, the sexuality of this film, which could have been overt, actually faded like an afterthought. This was a film about mental illness and personality struggle with an inner beast. It was also a fairly twisted love story. This is a bona fide horror film, however, but it's more on par with "May" than "MSP". It has a unique mood and the horror is entirely plot driven sans utter nastiness, with the exception of one very memorable instrumental kill and a corn field scene involving a child. Some say that they predicted the twist, but I really didn't. Regardless, the story's concrete and Aja's direction is solid. The setting of the house was a light hearted innocence, hearkening to the country days of leaving your door unlocked and inviting in a stranger for a home cooked meal and use of your phone if needed. The blood spattered floors gave a sharp contrast to that warm splendor of rural life. Lighting and the fleeting blue tones in the truck scenes were remarkable. I could sense the despair and chill of the cold steel pressing persistently on raw wrists and bare thighs. This film ranks in my top ten horror favorites and as always, all subs no dubs- Enjoy! Your pal Creepie Suzie P.S. If you have already seen this movie just imagine if there was no twist! What is would pale to what could have been and this film could have been one amazingly deranged, dirty, and completely scummy slasher flick. Ahhhhhhh what could have been if only. Regardless though, it's not a bad little piece of cerebral horror cinema as it stands.
