Best movie ever!
A Masterpiece!
Let me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.
By the time the dramatic fireworks start popping off, each one feels earned.
careful; SPOILERS! Hi I love cinema but don't write many reviews, but here I can't help but wonder what is the point of a movie like this? you learn nothing, no one is interesting and it is not even plausible. I like Kate Hudson but this vehicle for her is from someone who likes her even more. there is no interest in this movie whatsoever, the acting is alright but what is it trying to say? For starters you can't leave your kids to anyone just because you feel like it, family or not. they have to be approved and willing and capable. actors read this and agreed to it , Helen Mirren? they must have owed some favors. what is the feedback? strange. don't waste your time the actors did already.
Raising Helen is a beautiful film which takes care of a very sensitive topic in our society of raising someone's children whom you have known very well. It is one of those films. It tells the story of a free spirited woman (Helen) who works hard and enjoys her life to the full. But due to the calamitous death of her sister and brother-in-law she gets chosen to be the legal guardian of their children instead of her other sister who is unlike her. The story goes on by how Helen copes with the situation to try to become a successful working single mom.Kate Hudson as Helen gives an outstanding performance. I never did like her that much, always thought she was overrated nonetheless this acting has made me a fan of her and I am looking forward to her next appearance in Wish I Was Here (2014).Coming to the child stars, Abigail Breslin as Sarah does the best among the others. It is good to see her getting transformed into a teen star from a child one. Hayden Panettiere as Audrey accomplished her task well in this movie but is not great and Spencer Breslin as Henry is a notch down from both of them as he couldn't get some expressions right in my point of view.Joan Cusack as Jenny the other sister does well as a supporting actor which is certainly expected from her. John Corbett as Pastor accomplishes at providing the humorous moments needed in the film and Helen Mirren has a minor role, however a good one.Largely the film felt a little rushed to me although it already stands at 119 minutes, I think other characters should have been developed more and added emotional touch could also be given to it. Nevertheless, it's a decent popcorn flick that can be viewed with your family on a weekend.Overall it's a 7/10 from my side.
From director Garry Marshall (Pretty Woman), I had heard this title a couple of times in places, so I decided I might as well give it a go. Basically modelling agent Helen Harris (Kate Hudson, daughter of Goldie Hawn) has her life changed after the death of her sister and brother-in-law in a car crash. In her sister's will, her children are wanted in the custody of Helen instead of her more responsible elder sister Jenny Portman (Joan Cusack), who has kids herself. But Helen has no choice, and soon enough, she learns how hard it is to look after fifteen year old Audrey (Heroes' Hayden Panettiere), ten year old Henry (The Cat in the Hat's Spencer Breslin) and five year old Sarah (Little Miss Sunshine's Abigail Breslin, and Spencer's real sister). Helen does find help with handsome young Pastor Dan Parker (John Corbett), also the kids' principal. In the end, Jenny, originally quite resentful of Helen being chosen instead of her, understands the sister's decision, and Helen gets her job as modelling agent back from Dominique (Dame Helen Mirren), and she, Dan and the kids get their happy ending. Also starring Felicity Huffman as Lindsay Davis, Hector Elizondo as Mickey Massey, Sakina Jaffrey as Nilma Prasad, Kevin Kilner as Ed Portman, Amber Valletta as Martina, Paris Hilton as Amber and The Nutty Professor's Larry Miller as Car Buyer. Hudson is beautiful and a spirited performer, Cusack does well as her concerned older sister, and Mirren adds a little zing in her little moments, a good story that can probably be appreciated by all the family. Worth watching!
A well-worn comic premise is revived with some success in RAISING HELEN, a watchable family comedy that has the breezy direction of Garry Marshall and a charismatic cast working for it. Kate Hudson stars as Helen Harris, a Manhattan bachelorette who works at a modeling agency who finds her life turned upside down when she is awarded custody of her sister's three children after her sister's sudden death in a car accident. Also thrown into the mix is an underdeveloped romance with a hunky pastor, played by John Corbett (SEX AND THE CITY). The story plays out pretty much as expected though the screenplay attempts to encompass too much. Marshall's direction is strong and Hudson's charm is undeniable. Joan Cusack, as always, steals every scene she's in as Helen's sister Jenny, a tightly-wound supermom who thinks she should have gotten custody of the kids. Helen Mirren (in a refreshing change of pace) and Marshall's good luck charm, Hector Elizondo provide some amusing moments as Helen's two employers during the course of the story. The kids are well-played by Hayden Pannetierre, Abigail Breslin (LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE) and Abigail's real-life older brother, Spencer. Like most of Marhsall's films, it's a little too long, but laughter and warmth can be found here.
