It's complicated... I really like the directing, acting and writing but, there are issues with the way it's shot that I just can't deny. As much as I love the storytelling and the fantastic performance but, there are also certain scenes that didn't need to exist.

This movie was an absolute waste of 2 hours of my life I'll never get back. Don't waste your time on it. Boring, drags on and on and on with very little story. Loser of a movie for Nicholas Cage. He is not aging well and needs to stay out of action movies. I use the term 'action movie' loosely in this description.Watch something better. Perhaps an old Bruce Willis movie or Conair.

After watching Tokarev, I had to read a few reviews. What you quickly realise, is that most of the 'hate' comes from viewers discovering this isn't the film they were expecting. It's something very different. I'm not going to say it was brilliant, but this film is well made, with some pretty good actors (albeit not always at their best). This isn't another 'Taken', as many seemed to expect. It plays with your expectations by setting up that kind of story, then turning it into a revenge thriller, which in turn is yet another opportunity to mess with your expectations. What you finally realise, with these morally dubious characters, is that actions have consequences. Violence begets violence. This is a morality play, a tragedy in the Greek tradition (I'm not saying it's of the same quality). This isn't another gangster movie that glorifies the cool lifestyle. Some reviewers also questioned why Danny Glover's character is there. He's the voice of reason. The voice of conscience. Nicolas Cage's character has become a 'good' person, attempting to redeem himself from his bad ways, but when something terrible occurs, this puts him to the test. Can he still be good, without the original reason he had (his daughter)? He doesn't have to return to his old ways, but his core is rotten, despite his attempts, and he cannot resist the fall. Glover's police officer is there, each step of the way, offering him the opportunity to pull back, but he can't.Rachel Nichols is very good, in a role that could have easily been disposable. She's somewhere in between. Someone who feels they could do terrible things in the name of vengeance/justice, but becomes the final victim of the fallout from Cage's violent past.So essentially, perhaps not a great film, but it's different and goes against expectations by using clichés for it's setups but not its ultimate resolution (in this type of story, anyway). As someone else said, it's probably a solid 6, but I'll give it a 7 to offset some of the negativity.

Nicolas Cage is 50 years old but looks odd for his age. His hair looks unnatural, he really needs to take it back to the shop and ask for an exchange. His post Oscar winning glory days are well behind him when for a few years he had that knack of making blockbuster action films and more offbeat art films that gained critical acclaim. Mired with tax demands he now makes straight to DVD films solely for money to keep the tax authorities satisfied. In Tokarev, Nicolas Cage plays a reformed gangster who has to go back to his bad old ways and get his former crew together when his daughter gets kidnapped. When she is found dead killed by a Russian pistol they go after some Russian gangsters thinking its retaliation for past events.Danny Glover (who seriously is too old for this s**t) plays the oldest detective in town trying to stop Cage from having his vengeance. This is just a low rent version of Taken but Cage lacks the special skills that Neeson had apart from the moral that your past sins will come to haunt you, this is a derisory film.

OK it's not the best action film your ever going to watch but I thought it was an awesome film with a great storyline!!! Don't understand all the terrible reviews and the comparisons to taken as it is completely different. A bad action film to me is a film that just tries to pack as much violence and fighting in as they can without any substance and this film wasn't that. It had substance and kept you guessing. I read the reviews before I watched it and decided to watch it anyway and I'm glad I did. Nicholas Cage is just as good as he usually is in all his other films. Enjoyed it all the way through and didn't find it boring at all! Don't let the reviews put you off...watch it!
